Il Rainbow Bridge Concert fu l'ultimo grande evento live nella storia di Hendrix. Un concerto per un pubblico di pochi eletti, ai piedi del cratere del vulcano Haleakeala, a Maui. 30 luglio 1970.
Il nostro chitarrista come sappiamo tutti si spense qualche mese dopo. Proprio per tale motivo, questo concerto, pensato originariamente come sequenza di chiusura per la pellicola sperimentale 'Rainbow Bridge Vibratory Color/Sound Experiment', si caricò di un alone mistico probabilmente pari a quello della celeberrima esibizione a Woodstock. Non so per quale motivo rimase nei cassetti della Purple Haze Records prima di riemergere sotto forma di doppio cd. Molto probabilmente la risposta risiede nella qualità dell'audio, che lascia decisamente a desiderare nonostante i rimaneggiamenti digitali. E la performance?
La copertina parla di un 'sacro graal per i fan di Hendrix e collezionisti'. Temo di dover dissentire. L'Experience (nella versione con Cox al basso) suona tanto per suonare (naturalmente restando a livelli oltreumani), Hendrix è a pezzi e lo si sente nella voce, molto debole e registrata malissimo. La chitarra ha un suono malato. L'acustica è pessima, il feedback non è quello dei bei tempi andati, ma una risonanza fastidiosissima che Il Mancino non si prende neanche più la briga di gestire. Scordatevi il fretnoise del live all'isola di Wight, o la 'botta' della prima plettrata, o il 'crack crack' di un bel jack male schermato. Nonostante questo la performance mantiene il suo fascino, anzi, acquisisce quel tono di sofferenza estrema che giustifica la messa in commercio di tale prodotto.
La band concede due show, eseguiti a distanza di poche ore l'uno dall'altro. Nella seconda esibizione Hendrix usa una Gibson Flying V invece della tradizionale Strato bianca. Non che la cosa incida sulla qualità del suono. Il repertorio abbraccia un pò di quello che il pubblico vuole sentire e un pò di quello che il gruppo vuole suonare. Per intenderci il primo spettacolo si apre con 'Lover Man' un brano che Hendrix amava eseguire dal vivo, per chiudersi con l'attesissima 'Voodoo Chile' (in cui il nostro tocca il wha-wha davvero poco). Più spazio per la libera improvvisazione nel secondo set, dove troviamo il punto più alto del concerto, ovvero la chitarra a briglia sciolta di 'Jam Back at he House', sul canovaccio della semisconosciuta e strumentale 'Beginnings'.
Sia ben chiaro, non si tratta di un'ennesima operazione 'raschia-fondo-del-barile', tantomeno del migliore live Hendrixiano in circolazione, ma di una piccola chicca per fan, da custodire gelosamente a memoria del proprio chitarrista preferito, intristito e sofferente, genio indimenticato ed indimenticabile.
