Erano dieci anni che il vecchio John non si faceva sentire, preso com'era tra problemi familiari, battaglie legali con la casa discografica dei Creedence e vicissitudini varie, e a quell'epoca ci mancava.
In un'epoca di edonismo allo stato puro, di apparire più che essere e di produzioni musicali banali e plastificate, questo disco è calato su di noi come una autentica ventata di aria fresca, per chi non ne poteva più degli zuccherini deli Spandau e dei Durans ascoltare brani come "The Old Man Down the Road", "Rock and Roll Girls", "Searchlight" e le altre piccole gemme presenti in questo album è stato come una salvezza.
Il disco si apre con un pezzo che diventerà un "must" dei suoi concerti, "The Old Man Down the Road", il vecchio in fondo alla strada, visto come un qualcosa contro cui tutti prima o poi ci dobbiamo scontrare per fare la resa dei conti. Una canzone che comunque stabilisce subito le coordinate dell'album, rock'n'roll semplice e diretto.
"Rock and Roll Girls" era il singolo, finalmente per radio si poteva ascoltare uno di quei pezzi che erano classici Creedence, tre minuti di sano e puro divertimento.
Johnny in questo album dà anche degli ottimi esempi di country ("Big Train From Memphis", dedicata ad Elvis).
"I Saw It On TV" è forse uno dei pezzi più belli del Nostro, con una intro che rimanda molto a "Who'll Stop The Rain", una dolce ballata con una incantevole prestazione vocale.
Con "Mr. Greed" è rock duro e puro, mentre "Searchlight", che apriva il lato B del vinile è un altro pezzo che rimanda ai Creedence.
"Centerfield" è il pezzo più divertente del disco, ritmo serrato e belle chitarre sempre in evidenza, "I Can't Help Myself" è forse l'unico momento debole del disco, non troppo convincente, mentre "Vanz Kant Danz" è la polemica e l'invettiva contro Saul Zaentz, manager della casa discografica Fantasy, contro cui John è stato appunto impegnato in decenni di battaglie legali, poi vinte.
Uscisse oggi probabilmente sarebbe un buon disco rock'n'roll fra i tanti, ma nella valutazione bisogna anche capire l'epoca in cui uscì.

Con tracce memorabili come "The Old Man Down the Road" e "Rock and Roll Girls", il disco rappresenta una ventata di autenticità in un'epoca dominata da musica edonista e superficiale. Fogerty offre anche esempi di country e poesie in musica impegnate, affrontando anche le sue battaglie legali con la casa discografica.
