Google gli ha dedicato la stringa da cui con un clic partono le note di Imagine, YouTube ti invia direttamente verso una serie di massaggi di auguri, tra cui quelli di Ringo Starr che 70 anni li ha compiuti lo scorso Luglio ("Seventy, John, would you have believed?). Il 9 Ottobre John Lennon avrebbe compiuto 70 anni e in tutto il pianeta non si sono contati gli eventi per ricordarlo.
Solo per restare nei tre luoghi a lui più vicini: a Liverpool, nell'ambito dei due mesi di mostre e celebrazioni che termineranno l'8 Dicembre, c'è stato un infinito Birthday Party al Cavern di Mathew Street; a Londra c'è stato uno specialissimo Beatles Walking Tour organizzato da Richard Porter (il quale da 20 anni ogni giorno porta a spasso i turisti da Abbey Road fino al tetto di Savile Row) col concerto finale dei Sgt. Pepper's Only Dart Board Band; a New York, nell'area di Central Park intitolata agli Strawberry Fields, migliaia di persone si sono radunate a cantare gli inni di John.
E ancora: lassù, in Islanda, a Reykjavik, è stata accesa la Imagine Peace Tower con una cerimonia che si è conclusa con un concerto della Plastic Ono Band riformata per l'occasione da Yoko Ono, con il figlio Sean e un manipolo di artisti giapponesi, alla presenza della moglie di George Harrison.
Per restare in Italia, tra Ottobre e Novembre sono in pubblicazione una decina di nuovi (nuovi?) libri su John e sui Beatles, per non parlare del resto del mondo. Cinema: è imminente l'uscita nella sale del film Nowhere Boy di Sam Taylor Wood, imperniato sull'adolescenza e sui primi anni di Lennon.
Esagerato? No, se si pensa all'impatto che ha avuto Lennon in campo musicale, sociale e politico nei suoi anni.
Ma l'immarcescibile Yoko ha deciso di fare al coniuge un ulteriore regalo: la rimasterizzazione completa dell'opera omnia in un lussuoso cofanetto di 11 CD (uno dei quali contiene demo inediti) battezzato Signature Box, accompagnato da un nuovo CD/DVD di Greatest Hits e da un altro superbo box dal titolo Gimme Some Truth, con quattro CD suddivisi a tema: Roots (influenze rock & roll), Working Class Hero (brani socio-politici), Woman (canzoni d'amore) e Borrowed Time (canzoni sulla vita). Ma ancora non basta. C'è anche Double Fantasy Stripped Down, che forse è la vera sorpresa. Double Fantasy era l'album del 1980, pubblicato poco prima del tragico 8 Dicembre. Quattordici canzoni suddivise equamente tra John e Yoko (equamente di numero, non di qualità), in pratica le ultime 7 perle di John (altre 7 ce le avrebbe regalate Yoko nel postumo Milk & Honey). Ma secondo lei, il prodotto dell'epoca non rendeva giustizia all'inimitabile voce di John, in quanto, come consuetudine di quegli anni, si tendeva a soffocare il cantante con la sovraproduzione dei suoni. In sintesi, la voce di Lennon gridava vendetta. Tra lo scetticismo generale che accompagna noi poveri compratori quando si tratta di operazioni simili (e quando di mezzo c'è lei), è stato necessario ascoltare il nuovo Double Fantasy prima di dare giudizi, per poi finire a chiedere umilmente venia e riconoscere che stavolta la terribile giapponesina c'ha azzeccato. I pezzi sono come rinati a nuova vita, e perfino le improbabili canzoni di Yoko oggi sembrano meno assurde di trent'anni fa. John urla, sussurra e mugugna come se stesse accanto a te; dal timbro della sua voce si possono cogliere tutte le emozioni e le contraddizioni di cui era preda. I'm Losing You è straziante, quasi ti terrorizza (cosa dovrei fare, metterci sopra un cerotto per smettere di sanguinare?), Beautiful Boy, la ninnananna per il figlio Sean, ti fa piangere (la vita è quello che ti succede mentre sei occupato a fare altre cose...), Watching The Wheels ti costringe a pensare (la gente mi fa solo domande confuse, io rispondo che non ci sono problemi, solo soluzioni), Starting Over ti dà speranza (è il momento di spiegare le ali e volare, non lasciare che passi nemmeno un altro giorno), Woman è dedicata all'altra metà del cielo, Cleanup Time ci rivela che a bordo della nave magica non ci sono più amici, ma neanche nemici. Addirittura Dear Yoko, che sembra uscita da un polveroso LP di Buddy Holly, è ora assai più piacevole.
Ecco, adesso si può capire meglio perché mai, sempre più spesso, troviamo Lennon al primo posto tra i cantanti di sempre. Lui forse non aveva l'ugola di un Freddie Mercury, e nemmeno l'estensione vocale di Paul McCartney o di Mick Jagger, ma provate a sentire come canta qui, con il suo caratteristico timbro un po' nasale, a volte straziante, a volte sarcastico, spesso dolce ma sempre vero. E unico. Come quando ci spiazza con quel falsetto delicato che è riusciva a dare un tocco magico anche alle canzoni più mediocri.
Per una volta, grazie Yoko. E complimenti anche a Sean per il disegno di copertina.
