"Young and Stupid" è una preziosa raccolta piena zeppa di capolavori creati da un gruppo New Wave ingiustamente dimenticato e sottostimato: i Josef K. A differenza dei conterranei Cocteau Twins, Associates, Ultravox e John Foxx che qualche riscontro di critica e pubblico lo hanno comunque ottenuto, il quartetto di Edimburgo è rimasto invece sempre nell’ombra, forse per colpa della loro breve carriera (poco più di tre anni) e della scarnissima discografia (solo un album).
Eppure i sei singoli con relative b-side raccolti in questo disco sono a dir poco splendidi nel loro essenziale stile post-punk: chitarre taglienti e dirette che rifuggono da ogni cliché, basso pulsante e melodico mai banale, batteria secca e incalzante con interventi sporadici di effetti sinth.
“Ma sono i Joy Division!”, direte voi, ed in effetti il sound proposto ricorda il gruppo di Manchester, solo che la voce e le canzoni di Paul Haig avevano poco a che fare con la monoliticità e l’enfasi drammatica di Ian Curtis; anche i Josef K esprimevano malinconia, inquietudine e fatalismo, solo che nonostante tutto nei loro lavori trovava posto anche una certa speranza, se non addirittura un amaro ottimismo.
Semplificando si potrebbe dire che i Josef K assomigliano ai Cure del '79 che suonavano con lo stile dei Joy Division, ma questo paragone può essere fuorviante perché gli scozzesi mettevano comunque una buona dose di personalità e originalità tutta loro.
Tra i brani notevoli presenti in questa compilation che riporta alla luce molti brani altrimenti irreperibili, da segnalare le schizofreniche “Crazy To Exist”, “Final Request” e “Night Ritual”, le vagamente brasiliane “Heaven Sent” e “Sorry For Laughing”, le melodiche e poppeggianti “Chance Meeting” (presente in due versioni) e “It’s Kinda Funny”, le oscure “Radio Drill Me” e “Torn Mentor”. Tra i brani della Peel Session presente come bonus troviamo anche una curiosa cover di “Applebush” di Alice Cooper(!).
Un disco consigliatissimo agli amanti della New Wave e a coloro che cercano una musica con un perfetto equilibrio tra melodia ed incisività.
