Prima di cominciare a recensire l'album bisogna fare alcune importanti premesse: questa non è una band di sfigati e di sconosciuti che conosco solo io. Tra la fine degli anni '70 e la prima metà degli anni '80 i Journey vendettero milioni di dischi solo negli USA ed erano tra i gruppi americani capaci di riempire completamente le arene.
Fatta questa premessa ne faccio un'altra, ossia non conoscere i Journey vuol dire non conoscere una buona parte del rock americano. Naturalmente devo giustificare questa mia affermazione e lo faccio subito: I Journey sono i capostipiti, i fondatori dell'AOR. Questo genere musicale è semisconosciuto in Italia anche per colpa di una critica musicale che ha sempre sminuito ed osteggiato questo tipo di genere capace in America di vendere in tutti gli anni 80 milioni di dischi e di tenere sotto scacco almeno metà delle classifiche di dischi americani.
In cosa consiste questo genere? In un rock molto melodico che strizza l'occhiolino alla classifica, molto energico e spesso contaminato da metal e pop, con una base cmq hard rock. Per chi non conosce il genere posso indicare una canzone che anche i muri conoscono, scritta da uno dei gruppi AOR più importanti, cioè i Survivor e la canzone è la colonna sonora di Rocky, cioè "Eye of Tiger" che tutti voi conoscete. Ecco l'aor è più o meno così: canzoni accessibili con classica struttura strofa e ritornello, ma molto energiche, con ritornelli anthemici e grande preparazione tecnica dei musicisti e ricercatezza strumentale.
Sicuramente molti amanti degli intellettualismi musicali staranno storcendo il naso, ma a me della musica piace molto soprattutto il trasporto fisico ed emotivo che da, quindi queste masturbazioni mentali sul fatto che un gruppo che vende milioni di dischi e che magari può usare in qualche canzone ritornelli mielosi che fanno l'occhiolino al pop sia merda, lo lascio agli adolescenti brufolosi, che forse si dimenticano che negli anni '70 gruppi come Led Zeppelin e Deep Purple o un Mike Oldfield capace di creare una suite strumentale lunga più di 40 minuti vendevano milioni di dischi.
Ritornando all'album, i membri dei Journey che composero "Infinity", sono di tutto rispetto, ad esempio i due chitarristi Gregg Rolie e Neal Schon vantano collaborazioni con Santana ma anche con Zappa, insomma tutt'altro che sprovveduti, infatti i primi 3 album dei Journey sono improntati su un jazz-rock con aperture latine tipicamente di stile Santana. Dopo queste prime prove, il loro stile cambia completamente, grazie anche all'ingresso in formazione di Steve Perry, uno dei più grandi talenti vocali di tutta la storia del rock. Quando parlo di ignoranza della critica musicale italiana, mi riferisco anche al fatto che nelle varie classifiche dei cantanti non compare un nome come Perry, un genio della voce! La sua prestazione su "Infinity" è leggendaria, davvero commovente. Il genere che propongono è ancora lontano dall'AOR di cui saranno i capostipiti. Quello che propongono qui è un rock melodico, di classe, con virate verso l'hard rock. Cmq tra gli album dei Journey che ho ascoltato, questo è il più melodico, il meno energico per così dire, eppure ascoltando l'iniziale "light" non si potrà che rimanere incantati dalla sua bellissima melodia, resa ancora più magica dalla voce di Steve Perry. Anzi possiamo dire che molte delle canzoni dei Journey se fossero cantate da un qualunque altro cantante, non avrebbero lo stesso effetto e perderebbero molto. Un'altra incredibile perla è "Wheel in the Sky": in questa canzone tutto è perfetto; la chitarra crea trame affascinanti e la voce di Perry raggiunge le stelle. Consiglio di ascoltare le due canzoni che ho nominato, solamente per rendervi conto che quando parlo di Steve Perry non esagero.
L'album per il resto è godibile, magari non è il migliore dei Journey, ma è assolutamente ben fatto ed emozionante e contiene forse una delle migliori prestazioni di Steve Perry. Non mi resta che consigliarvi l'ascolto. Consigliato soprattutto a chi vuole concedersi una dose abbondante di emozioni pure, trasmesse da un gruppo che suona musica, la quale non dimentichiamoci è prima di tutto melodia!
