Il secondo disco dei Journey esce nel 1976 e li vede ridotti a quartetto, essendosi liberati del superfluo chitarrista ritmico George Tickner. Le cose vanno decisamente meglio rispetto all’auto intitolato album d’esordio, senza che ci sia però ancora da entusiasmarsi. Il gruppo si scrolla di dosso una certa parte di scorie progressive, genere per il quale non è versato, limitando in particolare quella tendenza a portare le composizioni sempre in tempo lento, a’la Pink Floyd. Si cerca di indurire al massimo il suono, ancorché molto melodico, picchiando di più sugli strumenti e urlando maggiormente nel microfono.
Il cantante (e tastierista) Gregg Rolie ce la mette tutta, cercando di rendere accattivante e comunicativo il suo stile… la potenza c’è ma timbro, espressività ed estensione sono solo decenti. Quando stava coi Santana tali limiti erano meno importanti, essendo quella formazione dedita (allora) ad intense e psichedeliche jam session strumentali, in un tripudio di percussioni solcato dal vero e proprio canto solista dello strumento di Carlos, notoriamente fra i chitarristi più melodici di sempre. Coi Journey è diverso, quando il gruppo tenta di eseguire canzoni strutturate, molto hard rock ma con strofe e ritornelli possibilmente accessibili, il talento limitato di Rolie come frontman paga dazio.
In attesa di tempi migliori (che poi verranno alla grande) si registra il primo episodio notevole del repertorio, quello che intitola il lavoro: gran parte del merito va all’autore e strumentista dominante del pezzo, l’allora ventenne chitarrista Neal Schon, che comincia da qui ad affilare le armi e scalare le classifiche nella considerazione degli addetti ai lavori. Il riccioluto Neal sistema a dovere il tocco sullo strumento, imbelletta elegantemente il suono con chorus e reverberi, arrangia con classe e dinamica l’accompagnamento, incrementa distorsione e attacco della pennata negli assoli, manlevandosi per buona parte dal suono Santana che fin lì l’aveva caratterizzato. “Look Into The Future” è un brano chitarristico strabordante ma lirico e denso, che vale da solo la stelletta in più che quest’opera si merita rispetto a quella d’esordio.
Il resto dell’album non presenta altre eccellenze: prevale una specie di hard fusion, un virtuosismo strumentale iper amplificato, velleitario e cocciuto nel cercare, e non trovare, vera ispirazione ed efficacia, con tutti e quattro gli strumentisti che si danno un gran daffare, rubacchiando qualcosa ai Kansas (il quasi strumentale “Midnight Dreamer”) oppure ai Wishbone Ash (l’introduzione a due chitarre armonizzate di “She Makes Me”). Si tenta anche la carta del brano più lineare e da classifica con l’opener “On A Saturday Nite”, strutturato su un greve pianoforte ribattuto, ma manca la necessaria leggerezza, il savoir faire di chi sa fare del pop rock con naturalezza traendo da una frase, da una successione di poche note un motivo agganciante e peculiare, arte questa ben più difficile che suonare centomila note in tanti modi e ritmi diversi, senza molto costrutto.
Non ci siamo ancora… per ora i Journey sono un ben preparato, ma discretamente anonimo gruppo rock, con un chitarrista in decisa evidenza e poco altro da segnalare su disco, intanto che dal vivo la formazione si concede indefessamente, consolidando il sodalizio fra i musicisti e la loro ambizione, benché l’immediato futuro riservi ancora modesti miglioramenti e riscontri.Elenco tracce testi e samples
