Band dotata da sempre di eccezionale classe e stile, i Journey hanno subito, nel corso degli anni della loro lunga ed onorata carriera, svariati cambiamenti di line up, ma questo album del 1996 vede la presenza dei grandi nomi storici, Perry, Schon, Cain, Valory e Smith, uniti tutti insieme in una magica reunion che rappresenta certamente anche un acmè a livello compositivo.
Si potrebbe definire, con parole più appropriate e consone, come l'album della maturità artistica del gruppo ed il lavoro che, probabilmente, più di ogni altro, riunisce e racchiude non soltanto le presenze eccellenti che hanno reso celebre e famosa in tutto il mondo la band, ma anche e soprattutto le loro maggiori potenzialità compositive ed artistiche, la loro capacità di fondersi ed interagire, attraverso una voce magistrale e sensuale, una chitarra intensa e folgorante, una tastiera morbida, quasi vellutata, sfoggiando una capacità tecnica degna dei più grandi gruppi storici del passato.
Il primo brano "Message Of Love" rappresenta una fusione perfetta di potenza unita alla migliore tradizione AOR, dove voce e chitarra si inseguono con ritmi sempre più veloci ed incalzanti, ma ben presto la vena romantica del gruppo prende il sopravvento con una ballad dal titolo "When You Love A Woman", che nel 1997 riceverà una nomination Grammy, anche se, in questo ambito, è certamente assai più rilevante e degna di nota la canzone "Still She Cries", che per intensità e capacità di trasmettere emozioni profonde ed intense, è la degna erede di "Open Arms".
Non mancano episodi particolarmente effervescenti, come "Castles Burning", dove le sonorità assumono contorni più tipicamente hard and blues, con una chitarra a tratti velatamente hendrixiana da parte di Neal Schon, così come sono presenti brani mid tempo di assoluta bellezza come "If He Should Break Your Heart" o "Don't Be Down On Me Baby", quest'ultimo particolarmente riuscito per le brillanti soluzioni melodiche in esso presenti.
Ma questo lavoro dei Journey riserva ancora tante grandi emozioni, una love song di eccezione come "When I Think Of You", un assolo di chitarra a doppia ripresa da brivido in "Easy To Fall", la sensazione di tristezza e malinconia che ci accompagna nelle giornate di pioggia autunnali in "It's Just The Rain", il senso della continuità con il passato in "Trial by Fire" ultima canzone di un album che ha in sè la stessa luminosità degli anni aurei, quando il gruppo suonava "When the lights go down in the CityAnd the sun shines on the bay Do I want to be there in my City Ooh, ooh".
Assolutamente da ascoltare e da "gustare" come un grande vino di annata.
