Non lasciatevi ingannare dal nome, i Junior Boys non sono una “boy band”, ma un duo canadese composto da Jeremy Greenspan e da Matthew Didemus. Il gruppo è stato fondato nel 1999 da Greenspan e da Johnny Dark che in seguito ha abbandonato il progetto.
Il loro debutto è arrivato con l’album “Last Exit” e dopo due anni tornano con il disco che sto appunto per recensirvi. “So This Is Goodbye” differentemente da “Last Exit”, disco dove si laciava più spazio a varie alchimie e sperimentazioni, si ricerca in maggior parte la melodia. Nello stesso tempo è un sinth-pop che indaga anche in vari campi musicali, come il minimalismo, il funk e la disco.
Le ritmiche, sempre molto ben curate, prendono molto come punto di riferimento quelle degli anni ottanta, come quelle utilizzate da Soft Cell e The Human League, per citarne alcuni. Come il cd parte non si può non lasciarsi andare al ritmo dance del brano di apertura “Double Shadow” a cui segue il funk di “The Equalizer”, per poi passare alle atmosfere rarefatte di “First Time” e ad un tributo ai Depeche Mode con “Count Souvenirs”. Comunque non mancano certamente alcuni punti deboli, come i synth un po’ datati di “Like a Child” o alle sonorità di “In the Morning”, moltissimo somiglianti a quelle di “Your Love” di Frankie Knuckles.
Lasciando perdere queste piccole debolezze nell’album vi sono momenti di malinconia introdotti dalla cover di Frank Sinatra “When No Cares” e dal brano “Caught In a Wave” . Infine il disco si conclude con le bellissime e trascinanti pulsazioni di “FM”.
Insomma “So This Is Goodbye” è, seppure con le sue piccole pecche, un bellissimo album pieno di creatività e di impegno capace di divertire ed emozionare.
