Appena reduci dal successo di uno dei loro album piu' intimisti e riusciti, "Last fear deal gone down", i Katatonia pubblicarono nell'estate del 2001 questo ep di tre pezzi dal titolo "Teargas" (dall'omonimo pezzo che brillo' gia'sull'album).
La tradizione di realizzare minis di alto spessore viene qui confermata, non solo dalla qualita', ma anche dall'inclusione di due pezzi inediti. E che brani inediti.. "Teargas" e' pura tristezza sonica, nostalgie per sentimenti irrimediabilmente perduti, lacrimosi conflitti interni e rassegnazione. Lamentosa rassegnazione. Fragili le armonie vocaliche di Jonas seguono chitarre liquide e litaniose in angoli perduti dove il vuoto è il principe dei sogni piangenti. Arte e malinconia.
"Sulphur" mi stupisce per non essere stata pubblicata sul main Cd in quanto, qualitativamente parlando, non avrebbe certo sfigurato. piu' positiva rispetto alla precedente si arricchisce di fraseggi acustici e melodie dal flavor quasi pop (nel cantato). Il rifferama attinge a piene mani del passato, "Discouraged ones"su tutti. Chiude "March 4" forse meno intensa ma contenente un chorus d'effetto ed un ottimo guitar-crunch da parte di Anders e Fredrik.
Senza dubbio lavoro di grande interesse per i fans piu' "melodici" della band che dubito i cultori "Dance of December souls" adoreranno ma a me poco importa. Il valore elevato mi permette di consigliarlo a chi adora l'abbinamento tra il romanticismo toccante e le crude partiture metalliche. Piangete in silenzio.
