Un tempo Kelis era incazzata. Nel 1999 decise di urlarlo al mondo con "Cought up there", estratto da "Kaleidoscope", album di debutto che le valse gli onori della critica del New Musical Express, e che la fece conoscere al mondo come "...La nuova Lauryn Hill, solo più brava".
La cantante originaria di Harlem con il suo esordio non solo aveva dimostrato buone doti nel suo genere musicale ma era riuscita a sconvolgere con il suo atteggiamento aggressivo e femminista. Potrebbero sembrare strane tante precisazioni ma vi prego di seguirmi. Nel 2001 pubblica solo in Europa "Wanderland". Il disco non è mai uscito negli U.S.A. perché Kelis non riuscì a trovare un produttore disposto a pubblicarlo, stando alle notizie divulgate, e non volendo scendere a compromessi optò per la strenua difesa del suo essere un'artista. L'album fu un fiasco e lei tirò avanti con una serie di duetti inascoltabili con gente tipo Enrique Iglesias. E questo è il primo passo verso la degenerazione. In seguito si reinventa manager per P. Diddy e si rifà la verginità perduta con collaborazioni di livello come Outkast e Neptunes.
D'altronde i requisiti per risalire non le mancano. Diplomata presso la Guardia School for the Arts, ha pur sempre ottenuto le lodi dell'esordio e poi da una che dichiara di non voler mai dimenticar le sue radici umili (chiama casa solo Harlem), che attacca le radio americane perché passano solo schifezza e che odia l'invadenza dei giornalisti, insomma una tipetta "col pepe in c..o", come si dice da queste parti, ti aspetti qualcosa di eccezionale.
A questo punto le si presentano due strade: incamminarsi nuovamente lungo un sentiero impervio ma dal quale si esce con un'integrità inattaccabile sotto tutti i punti di vista oppure intraprendere una via più comoda e ciao ciao credibilità. Ha scelto la seconda.
"So, now I'll give you something to taste and you tell me what you think ok?" dice Kelis rivolgendosi praticamente ad una voce maschile fittizia e metaforicamente all'ascoltatore. Ne esce fuori l'"Intro" che, fra rumori di bibite stappate e caramelle scartate, è degna della Lil'Kim più tamarra. Così inizia "Tasty", terzo album di Kelis uscito nel 2003. La produzione è affidata al celeberrimo Antonio "LA" Reid, "padrino" di Pink e Avril Lavinge e responsabile di tale abominio. Dopo l'antipasto ci viene servita "Trick me" che sembra voler riprendere lo stesso comportamento aggressivo verso il maschilismo (...freedom to you has always been whoever landed on your dick...) ma le ammiccanti danze del video e la voce esasperatamente sensuale entra leggermente in contraddizione con il testo. "Milkshake", terza traccia, è il primo singolo estratto dall'album accompagnato da un video che negli Stati Uniti viene trasmesso solo dopo le ore diurne dove la nostra ex-ribelle sbatte il decolletè in faccia all'intero personale di una tavola calda. Inutile soffermarsi sul testo di un canzone che ha un titolo del genere e che è sintetizzabile in una accozzaglia di suoni elettronici da far ribrezzo. Sorvoliamo "Keep it down" che sembra scritta per i Good Charlotte (Che è tutto dire) e arriviamo diritti diritti a "In Public", tipico pezzo dalle sonorità hip hop dove Kelis duetta con NAS, personaggio infleuente nell'ambiente dei rapper e affini nonché suo fidanzato; in una coppia simile il tema non può essere che il sesso, o meglio dove farlo.
La saporosa Kelis però non vuole turbare eccessivamente la stima di quei suoi ammiratori che la seguono dal brillante esordio e ripesca dal suo secondo, sconosciuto album "Flashback", un pezzo simpatico, forse l'unico insieme a "Millionaire" che (Guarda caso) è stata realizzata in collaborazione con Andre 3000 e conserva sonorità più vicine al soul. Meno convincenti sono "Glow" e "Attention" nonostante la presenza del capace Raphael Saadiq. E mi fa piacere dire questo, non potete immaginare quanto. Il peggiore degli artisti può diventare inattaccabile attraverso una produzione coi fiocchi e convocando alla propria corte il fior fiore dei musicisti e così si va avanti. Le palle ti girano ancor di più nel momento in cui ti trovi d'avanti una tizia che quattro anni prima si proclamava a momenti la figlia illegittima del Che e poi non solo sceglie i soldi ma c'ha pure pretese alte. Non è paranoia, vi assicuro. E non è neanche la mia scarsa predisposizione all'hip hop, al rap. Ma vi assicuro che anche voi pensereste la stessa cosa mentre ascoltate la voce mediocre di Kelis cantare buone produzioni hip hop. Per frutta arriva "Stick up" e per dolce "Marathon", conferma di ciò che penso.
"Ok, now swallow" e così si conclude il tutto.
E no Kelis. Il rospo non me lo ingoio....
