I Killswitch Engage o si amano o si odiano.
O la loro musica comunica potenza, espressività artistica, oppure non si sopporta tanta rabbia, tanta carica strumentale. Siamo in un paese libero, ognuno ha il diritto di parola e replica. Ma se “As Daylight Dies”, quartogenito di questo prolifico gruppo del Massachusetts, potesse godere di fisicità antropomorfa starei a sentirlo parlare per ore. E’ un disco davvero formidabile, sancisce una volta per tutte lo stile KSE, oramai stabilizzato sotto la guida dell’energico Jones (vocal) che con “The End Of Heartache” aveva iniziato un nuovo percorso stilistico. Dopo averlo ascoltato tutto per la prima volta, A.D.D. lascia un sentore amaro, come se non s’avesse compreso la natura d’ogni singolo brano, troppo carico e potente per poter essere recepito al primo ascolto.
Allora scorporiamo il tutto, pezzo per pezzo.
“Daylight Dies”
Overture immensa, chitarre che creano riff come archi (le ritroveremo spesso negli altri brani), batteria che definisce la struttura della canzone, vocal session a tratti corale (Adam&Howard) con intermezzi interessanti ed in altri un urlato sostenuto con growling agli estremi, spesso filtrati con un 'distorin'. Ottima la prima.
“This is Absolution”
Ritmo accelerato il secondo classificato (ma solo in ordine di ascolto), passaggi aggressivi tipici dell’album precedente e con sezioni più soft assegnate ad Adam, che anche in molti altri brani trova più spazio d’espressione. Meritatissimo. La formula è la stessa di sempre: prima un urlato agli estremi , vocalizzi soft poi. Il ritornello è orecchiabile, in toto si nota un’accurata esecuzione, chitarre molto più “ampie”, cioè riempiono di più lo spazio sonoro di sottofondo dando consistenza al pezzo. Questa formula è tipica di A.D.D.
“The Arms of Sorrow”
Pezzo molto orecchiabile, Howard esegue solo parte vocale pulita, urlato lasciato a Adam. Sullo stile del brano “The End Of Heartache”, però più accesa, ritmo più carico. Le chitarre la fanno dà padrone, cariche e sempre sostenute. Molto buono, rimane subito in mente.
“Unbroken”
Track molto forte, tipico stile hardcore KSE, con gli ormai consolidati marchi di fabbrica quali vocale estremo-vocale soft. Forse un po’ monotona rispetto alle precedenti, non vi sono passaggi che contraddistinguono in incedere impetuoso (curioso l’uso dei tom, non ancora sperimentato nei precedenti lavori); porla al quarto posto la rende una privilegiata ma forse sarebbe dovuta essere verso la seconda metà. Discreta.
“My curse”
Singolo per eccellenza di questo LP. Urlato estremo all’inizio, rasenta il disumano. Ritmo travolgente, chitarre in un giro continuo che riempiono tutta la canzone. Adam è imbestialito, sprazzi di rabbia microfonata degni di nota, Howard si presta ottimamente ad alzare il tono della track. Quattro minuti che penetrano in profondità. Splendido.
“For You”
Brano molto carico. Batteria che dà il ritmo, chitarre al seguito, passaggi vocali sempre in alternanza fra soft-growling. Pedale rullante che pone stacchi fra le strofe, assegna un ottimo ritmo tenuto vivo dalla coppia Adam-Joel. Ritroviamo quel riempimento di chitarra, di pochi secondi, che come detto in precedenza crea un effetto di riempimento, ovatta l’anima del pezzo.
“My Heart Still Beats Your Name”
Pezzo puro, hardcore. Chitarre lanciate e ritornello in netta contrapposizione per lentezza alla velocità della track nel suo complesso. Adam presente con piccoli passaggi molto soft che danno quella alterità tipica dei brani dell’ LP precedente. Brano bello sino alla fine.
“Eye of the Storm”
Sulla riga del precedente, rimane più leggera per certi versi. Vi è una presenza maggiore di momenti melodici, accordi di chitarra alti e voce al seguito. Il basso si fa sentire verso la metà, solitamente lasciato un po’ troppo arretrato qui arricchisce il brano. Promosso.
“Break the silence”
Chitarre e batterie definiscono le linee guida, la voce crea la superficie. Forse il pezzo non si risolleva, rimane ancorato all’incipit iniziale. Bello il ritornello con lo scambio fra Howard ed un etereo (in voce) Adam. Inoltre ripresa dei “riff da riempimento” verso la conclusione. Si sente che siamo verso la fine dell’album. Un po’ ripetitiva, anche se il ritornello non è male. Infondo , we must break the silence, and we are alive.
“Desperate Times”
Inizio cadenzato, si evolve in un urlato aggressivo con chitarre in background che seguono l’evoluzione. E’ in questo brano che troviamo un imponente riempimento che dà corpo, restituisce solidità, arriva quasi a rendersi fastidioso. Foley (batteria) assegna il ritmo deciso ma non veloce. Nell’ultimo minuto un incedere lento viene seguito dalla ripresa di riff quasi fastidioso (il famoso riempimento) con urlato al seguito. Conclusione molto bella, degna forse per ultimo brano.
“Reject Yourself”
Da notare un riff molto trash di Adam, che continua in evoluzioni per tutto il pezzo. Voce di Howard più aperta interrotta da accelerazioni strumentali spaventose. Adam ha più spazio anche nel lato vocal, sia come corale che come solista. Apprezzate un urlo mostruoso a dieci secondi dal terzo minuto di track. Bel pezzo di chiusura, che si placa sull’ultimo minuto lasciando spazio ad un po’ di strumentalità. L’album è definitivamente esaurito.
IN SUMMA.
Gli aspetti salienti di tutta l’opera si contraddistinguono in una maturazione tecnica per tutti i componenti del gruppo. La lode va sia a Howard, maturato vocalmente e che si presta bene a passaggi continui fra urlati mozzafiato e melodici orecchiabili ma anche ad Adam, che oltre ad avere più spazio d’espressione su lato vocale, assegna maggiore completezza all’album. La firma dei KSE si fa sentire, è solida, questo lavoro ne ha dato la prova.
Bisogna riconoscere che sanno perfettamente equilibrare melodia e rabbia più scatenata, commistionando il tutto in un ottimo stile hardcore. Hanno ancora molto da esprimere, lo sentiremo.
