Tre anni fa ho fatto la conoscenza di un gruppo di ragazzi che suonavano in una band. Non sapendo che genere facessero. Uno di loro mi rispose che facevano emocore o qualcosa del genere. Io facendo finta di comprendere annuii e chiesi ulteriori informazioni. Mi disse che facevano qualcosa tipo Killswitch Engage... Il mistero si infittisce. Giorno dopo. Sera. Ci troviamo per andare a bere qualcosa in un irish pub. Vedo che il mio amico si avvicina con un ghigno malefico e mi allunga la mano. Vidi che c'era qualcosa... "The End Of Heartache". Fu così che dal viaggio di ritorno verso casa fino ad oggi, l'album continua a girare spesso nel mio lettore cd. (per chiunque sia interessato a delucidazioni: si è ancora quello del mio amico).
Comunque al di là di qualche vago caso non mi ero interessato a generi più incazzati del nu metal ed apprezzai molto questo salto, nonostante sapessi cos'era il core in generale e cos'era diventato ai tempi nostri: un sacco di canzoni uguali. Direi che la cosa più sconvolgente è come le canzoni ti sappiano prendere subito. Le lasci entrare come se nulla fosse e non riesci a lasciarle uscire per nessun motivo al mondo. Sinceramente è una cosa che non mi è mai capitata in un genere come questo. E allora via che si comincia. "A bid farewell" mi lascia di stucco. Avete mai visto un album che si apre con un addio? Semplicemente geniale come la canzone succitata. Si prosegue con "Take this oath" che a mio avviso non è proprio il massimo, ma rimane una bella canzone. Poi un urlo squarcia le casse. È "When darkness falls" stupenda canzone che rende bene la disperazione di uno scenario che rabbuisce e non dovrebbe. Inoltre fa parte della colonna sonora del film "Freddy vs Jason". Mitico.
Poi arriva uno dei pezzi forte dell'intero album: "Rose of Sharyn" con quella parte introduttiva acustica che si sposta in pieno emocore è veramente grande. E via anche "Breathe Life" che rimane una bella canzone stile Killswitch. Quindi si arriva alla title track che mi ha lasciato un po' perplesso. Siccome l'ho già sentita nei titoli di coda di "RE: Apocalypse" e mi è parsa alquanto pacata con voce classica melodica non vorrei che iniziassero a svendersi, ma noto con piacere che quella del cd è una versione più accattivante. Fatto sta che ancora non mi convince del tutto. La seguente "Declaration" la ritengo personalmente la traccia più bella dell'album con il suo gran bel mix tra parti urlate e parti cantate in melodico, un ritmo forsennato, ma che non sfocia nell'eccesso. Ogni volta che la sento perdo il controllo e mi scateno. Le ultime due tracce non mi hanno entusiasmato particolarmente anche se "Wasted sacrifice" risulta molto malinconica e triste e "delicata" (almeno nel melodico).
Album molto bello che mantiene saldi alle vette (se non in cima) il gruppo inglese che non cambiano di una virgola il loro stile nonostante il cantante non sia più quello di una volta. Stile che farebbero meglio a mantenere invariato perchè spinto quanto basta bello e sempre fresco con un leggerissimo calo rispetto agli esordi. Manca solo la loro "My last serenade" dell'album che in una edizione si può trovare anche doppio con alcuni live dei Kill che sicuramente molti possono apprezzare (aggiungere mezza stella al voto se acquistate questa edizione). Per chiunque possa essere interessato consiglio di stare in occhio, perchè tra non molto dovrebbe uscire il loro nuovo ultimo lavoro. ;)
