In UK leoni, negli USA... beh, avete capito, no?
Strano destino, quello della Followill gang. Esattamente quello che succede a personaggi come Robbie Williams, tanto per dirne una; ma qua siamo in ambito rock, ed è un altro discorso. La musica dei Kings Of Leon è stata finora un'incantevole mistura che viaggia dal garage al southern rock, percorrendo l'autostrada ad ampia carreggiata del pop rock melodico.
Capita, però, che i ragazzi facciano le cose in grande per questo nuovo "Only By The Night", compreso affidare il videoclip del nuovo singolo "Sex On Fire" (già grande successo, of course) ad una regista solitamente legata alla pop (?) music come Sophie Muller. Occhio ai pregiudizi, si dice di solito; beh, allora perlomeno svisceriamo.
Le mani subito avanti: 'sto "Only By The Night" suona alla grande, poche masturbazioni mentali. "Closer" è un'overtoure che crea subito l'atmosfera giusta, con Caleb che mette immediatamente in chiaro d'aver raggiunto la piena e completa maturità vocale e le chitarre che ronzano che è un piacere. Il problema è che il punto di forza di un disco magistrale come il precedente "Because Of The Times" era proprio la "sporcizia" di certi suoni e la minor ricerca della perfezione negli arrangiamenti e nella struttura dei pezzi. Insomma, manca l'immediatezza. Prendiamo pure la successiva "Crawl": qua il sound è molto più ruvido e aspro, ma la formale ricerca melodica è un po' troppo insistita. "Use Somebody" è persino etichettabile come "radiofonica", sentendola potreste convincervi di ascoltare gli Snow Patrol invece della band americana; ripeto, non è (sempre) un male, ma dai Followill ti aspetti sempre qualcosa in più.
Insomma, abbondano le atmosfere soft, e la grinta graffiante di cose come "McFearless" è sostituita da "finezze" quali "Revelry", "Manhattan" (sostenuta da un interessante groove plasmato dal basso elettrico), "Seventeen" (falsetto a tonnellate) e simili. Tutto molto bello, ma la grinta dov'è finita?
I ragazzi continuano a cavarsela, questo è indubbio. Ma la prossima volta sarà bene "sporcarsi un po' di più le mani", perché il rischio appiattimento è dietro l'angolo.
I nuovi U2 sarà meglio cercarli da altre parti.
