Finalmente sono riuscito a trovare questo disco "maledetto" della diva australiana: pubblicato nel marzo 1998, doveva intitolarsi "Impossible Princess" ma il titolo fu rimosso in seguito della morte di Lady Diana.
"Kylie Minogue" rappresenta il punto commercialmente più basso della cantante (fece una breve apparizione nella top 10 per poi crollare subito dopo) ma è sicuramente il suo vertice artistico, destinato a non essere più eguagliato. Spinta dal buon successo del duetto con Nick Cave, e dal trionfo della svolta "adult" di Robbie Williams (un altro ex teen idol) la Minogue decise infatti di realizzare un disco esplicitamente riferito al pubblico indie (che però guardò con diffidenza il progetto) avvalendosi di diversi nomi importanti del rock britannico tra i quali James Bradfield dei Manic Street Preachers (che scrisse, suonò e produsse due pezzi, i migliori del disco, "Some Kind Of Bliss" e "I Don't Need Anyone").
Il risultato è certamente spiazzante e diametralmente opposto al pop acqua e sapone dell'epoca dei "tre magnacci" Stock, Aitken e quell'altro: abbondano sonorità oscure e chitarre elettriche, probabilmente poco adatte alla Minogue ma non per questo deprecabili (basti pensare ai sofferenti versi orgasmici dell'iniziale "Too Far"), e tra un brano e l'altro non mancano le perle da riscoprire.
Peccato che questa strada, alla luce dello scarso riscontro di vendite, sarà abbandonata per tornare a imperversare sui dancefloor, ma questo disco rimane comunque un interessante esperimento da ascoltare con curiosità.

Kylie Minogue ha colto la palla al balzo, forse un po' troppo presto, anticipando di pochi mesi la rivoluzione elettronica - commerciale di Ray Of Light, masterpiece made in Madonna.
