Con soli due album Lou Rhodes e Andy Barlow, alias Lamb, si erano imposti all’attenzione di tutti come la risposta mancuniana ai Portishead.
Ma mentre la band di ‘Dummy', che condivide con i Massive Attack la paternità del ‘bristol-sound’, ha dimostrato in poco tempo una lentezza irritante nella pubblicazione dei dischi, i Lamb con il terzo lavoro giungono a piena maturazione artistica.
Costruito sul solito e coinvolgente mix di trip-hop e jazz, ed impreziosito dalla presenza di singoli come‘Gabriel’ e ‘One’, che per impatto ricordano la stupenda ‘Gorecki’, l’album colpisce per intensità emotiva più di quanto riescano a fare i pur splendidi ‘Lamb’ e ‘Fear Of Fours’.
Meno legato ai sequencer di Barlow, ‘What Sound’ risulta nel complesso più suonato e più curato nelle liriche e nelle parti vocali.
I due ‘agnelli’ ci danno ulteriore conferma della loro crescita musicale aprendo le porte dello studio di registrazione ad amici-artisti che rendono indimenticabile la loro presenza. Possiamo così ammirare Me’Shell N’degèocello prestare il suo basso dall’andatura quasi funky a ‘Sweet’ oppure Michael Franti degli Spearhead duettare con Lou nella sensazionale 'I Cry', o ancora, nel pezzo strumentale ‘Scratch Bass’, assistere alla sfida a colpi di piatti e loop elettronici tra gli Scratch Pervets e Barlow.
Presenti al ‘raduno musicale’in casa Lamb anche Jim Goodwin dei Doves e Arto Lindsay.
Smentiti coloro che li aspettavano al varco per criticarli qualora avessero scritto la nuova ‘Gorecki’ o avessero riproposto la stessa fortunata formula sonora, il duo britannico mostra nuove fonti d’ispirazione e la voglia di aprirsi ad altre realtà musicali senza per questo rinnegare o snaturare il loro apprezzato stile.
