BBC Sessions, ossia una raccolta di esibizioni, live, negli studi della BBC, raccolte tra il 1969 e il 1971, ossia nella parte più blues del fenomeno Zeppelin.
Dalle incursioni aeree della batteria di Bonzo, al fuoco in gola di Plant, dalle dita sfuggenti di Page alla "One Man Symphony Orchestra" di John Paul Jones, questo doppio CD contiene non solo i brani più famosi del primo volo musicale del Dirigibile, ma anche una serie di gustose cover di pezzi blues, di cui i Led Zeppelin erano grandi estimatori.
Senza scendere nei dettagli tecnici o "narrativi" di determinate canzoni, é subito utile dire perché comprare questo CD, o quantomeno che ha di particolare.
Nel primo disco si é subito colpiti dalla chitarra straziante, strascicante di Page che in maniera perfettamente circolare apre e chiude il primo disco con "You Shook Me" e "I Can't Quit You, Baby". Il Dirigibile colpisce per la sua capacità di rendere diversa la stessa canzone, "Communication Breakdown", in tre esecuzioni completamente dissimili le une dalle altre. Bellissime le due cover ("Somethin' Else" e "The Girl I Love She Has Black Hair") che veramente dimostrano l'assoluta classe di Robert Plant, sia in ritmo che in estro. E poi che dire di "Traveling Riverside Blues", canzone diventata simbolo dei Led Zeppelin. Per i loro "agiografi", infatti, questa canzone é il vero sigillo sul patto con il diavolo, una canzone apparentemente semplice, ma di malizia e profondità sottovalutate.
Il secondo disco presenta, invece, il repertorio classico degli Zeppelin "on stage". Da "Immigrant Song" a "Heartbreaker", da "Dazed And Confused" a "Since I've Been Loving You". Da notare "Out On Tiles/Black Dog", come del resto l'immancabile, stupenda "Stairway To Heaven". Si finisce con la grandissima interpretazione di "Whole Lotta Love", che, se nel primo CD si limita alla sola famosissima canzone, nel secondo disco si arricchisce di pezzi di repertorio blues tanto cari al Dirigibile come "That's Alright, Mama" o "A Mess Of Blues" e via discorrendo. Chiusura con "Thank You".
È un'ottima raccolta di live, da possedere assolutamente, senza scuse, né critiche. È costruito benissimo, un must per i fan, un "quasi-must" per gli appassionati generici, che, forse troppo critici con il repertorio più ermetico o "contaminato" dei Led Zeppelin, apprezzeranno il solo rock - blues della band inglese. 5, ovvio.
