A due anni di distanza dall'album d'esordio "Let Love Rule" (1989), Lenny Kravitz pubblica "Mama Said".
Il disco inizia con una cover di Michael Kamen & Hal Fredricks, "Fields of Joy". Il brano inizia in sordina con la chitarra acustica e il mellotron a far da sottosfondo alla voce di Lenny. Esplode nel ritornello con l'aggiunta di batteria e chitarre elettriche. L'assolo è affidato a Slash dei Guns N'Roses, che troviamo anche in "Always On The Run". Un pezzo ritmato fino allo spasimo che ripete ossessivamente alcune raccomandazioni materne (Mama Said per l'appunto). "Stand By My Woman", con al pianoforte Henry Hirsch, ci dona atmosfere più rilassate, che non tarderanno a rivivacizzarsi con "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over". Tutta la canzone ruota attorno ad un'originalissima orchestrazione, che non può non far sorridere. La statica "More Than Anything In This World" è guidata dall'organo, suonato dallo stesso Lenny Kravitz. "What Goes Around Comes Around" è un pezzo funk fin troppo leggero, che ci traina verso il capolavoro assoluto dell'album, "The Difference Is Why". In questo brano troviamo Lenny a tutti i strumenti (batteria, chitarra, basso). La chitarra, con l'eco al massimo, esegue spasmodicamente un giro di rara bellezza. Il testo parla di un amore finito e dell'impossibilità di ricominciare da capo.
"Stop Draggin' Around" è un semplice pezzo rock, che riesce comunque a contagiarti e a farti tenere il tempo. L'unico elemento di attrattiva di "Flowers For Zoe" è il tetro violoncello suonato da Nancy Ives. Passando per la ripresa (strascicata) di "Fields of Joy" si arriva a "All I Ever Wanted". Al pianoforte troviamo Sean Lennon, tanto che la canzone ha un certo sapore lennoniano. "When The Morning Turns To Night", con le sue atmosfere dylaniane, sembra quasi estrapolata dal primo album, "Let Love Rule". "What The… Are We Saying?" licenzia in modo impeccabile il miglior album di Lenny Kravitz fino ad oggi. Il minuto e cinquanta di "Butterfly", con il solo Lenny alla chitarra acustica, è fuori dal tempo e da ogni cosa terrena. La sua bellezza non trova parole adatte a descriverla. Pura.
