Che tra i due Lamb (li ricordate vero?) ci fossero non ottimi rapporti e differenti visioni della vita questo lo si sapeva e lo si notava anche dal vivo (non ve li siete persi, vero???): lei timida e concentrata sulla melodia, il canto e sulle sue semplicissime ma dense parole, lui sempre lanciato al coinvolgimento del pubblico con percussioni che riportavano il suono alla funzione sociale primaria della musica, a tratti costretto (ma sempre sculettante come uno di qualle insipide boybands) dalla programmazione delle macchine più tecnologiche.
Ora che le luci sul duo si sono spente Lou fa tutto da sola. Ha fondato un'etichetta che produrrà in modo indipendente musica anche non sua. Si chiama Infinite Bloom Recordings.
La prima creazione è proprio "Beloved One".
Diciamolo subito non c'e alcuna traccia di elettronica. Anzi sono le chitarre acustiche, i violini e le fisarmoniche a farla da padrone. Tanto che vien facile immaginare Lou e la sua band mentre registrano il disco in qualche impervia località tra i boschi, cullati dal suono di un fiume, protetti da legno e mattoni e vestiti di stoffe e lana. Le melodie sono nel complesso autunnali, intime ed appassionate ma questo è probabilmente scontato data la responsabilità della nostra nei Lamb. L'elemento di novità, a questo punto un po' scontata, è che ad ascoltare la nuova opera di Lou Rhodes vengano alla mente più Michelle Shocked, Ani DiFranco e Suzanne Vega che i Massive Attack o i Portishead. La chitarra stoppata e strappata di "Tremble" (forse singolo?) riporta dritti dritti al modo di suonare della prolifica autrice di Buffalo. "Fortress" ha l'atmosfera da brano folk americano perfetto per scaldarsi nella lunga notte e cucinare un piatto frugale davanti ad un falò. Soprattutto le percussioni ed i violini in "No Rerun" ricordano la Loreena McKennitt di "The Mask and The Mirror". Nella tesa title track si ritrovano ben miscelati elementi folk sia europei che nordamericani. "Inlakesh" potrebbe ricordarvi addirittura quei Led Zeppelin innamorati delle atmosfere maghrebine con le sue percussioni decise ma indolenti ed è facile berci sopra un caldo tè alla menta. Gli archi accompagnano il dolore della fine di un sentimento in "To Survive". Accordi di chitarra (acustica, of course!) forse troppo scontati nel conclusivo brano in crescendo ("Why") vengono comunque perdonati dal canto in stato di grazia della Rhodes. Per chi sa attendere una breve perla vocale lo attende.
Forse manca certa genialità tipica dei Lamb come in (valga per tutti) "B-Line" ma il disco solista della Rhodes sembra guadagnare (e non era facile!) in passionalità. Per cullarsi con la tremula, vellutata e calda voce di Louise che non ha mai smesso di stregarmi.
