Mi accingo a recensire forse il più bel disco di heavy metal che sia mai stato prodotto nella terra del Sol Levante, il mitico e tanto acclamato "Thunder In The East" dei Loudness.
Introduzione della band: la band vera e propria si forma proprio sulla fine degli anni 70 anche se il chitarrista Akira Takasaki e il batterista Munetaka Higuchi erano già insieme nei Lazy. In futuro si aggiungono il bass-player Masayoshi Yamashita e il carismatico singer Minoru Niihara è con questa formazione che i Loudness registrano ben 7 studio album ed 1 live (3 di questi: "The Birthday Eve", "Devil Soldier", "Law Of Devils Land" usciti solo in Giappone).
Ma parliamo di "Thunder In The East", (il più grande successo commerciale del quartetto) prodotto ottimamente dal mitico (per gli anni 80) Max Norman, forziere di 10 perle di heavy metal nipponico esaltato dagli scintillanti riffs di Akira e dalle potenti vocals di Minoru. Il disco parte con la canzone forse più famosa dei Loudness, "Crazy Nights" (dalla quale fu girato anche un video-clip); punto di forza della song è il ritornello ("Rock and roll crazy night You are the heroes tonight, Rock and roll crazy night You are the hero") che da alla song lo status di canzone simbolo delle notti americane di questi 4 heavy metal samurai.
Si prosegue con la potentissima "Like Hell", il riff di apertura di Akira Takasaki è qualcosa di imponente e il relativo assolo è degno dei suoi "colleghi contemporanei" Jake E Lee, Vivian Campbell e Doug Aldritch, questo fa si che la canzone scorra via che è un piacere lasciandoci nei nostri cuori tuoni e fiamme infernali. Il ricercato arpeggio di chitarra che apre "Heavy Chains" è qualcosa di unico, incomparabile e degno di questo heavy metal masterpiece; dopo il dolce arpeggio è Minoru Niihara a prendere le redini della song e in virtù del suo cantato cosi fiero, cadenzato e davvero Heavy Metal riesce a rendere questa song una killer-song.
"Get Away" inizia con un riffone di Akira e prosegue su ritmi sostenuti, mi voglio soffermare sull'assolo e descrivere questa meraviglia: si apre con una scarica di scale sparate a mille poi arriva la sorpresa: Akira ci delizia con un solo neoclassico; un misto fra il Malmsteen più inspirato e il primo Marty Friedman. "We Could Be Together" potrebbe tranquillamente essere uscita dale session di Bark at the Moon in virtù del suo rifferama così aperto e americano.
La seguente "Run For Your Life" è un altra perla del disco: un ritmo vagamente progressivo apre questa song poi gli arpeggi di Akira accompagnano un Akira in stato di grazia ma dopo pochi secondi è pronto per esplodere il magnifico ritornello ("Run for your life Run from the fire Want to survive Run for your life") che ci porta all'assolo molto meditato e armonico del solito Akira. Con "Clockwork Toy" e "The Lines are Down" siamo ancora alle prese con ritmi sostenuti, ritornelli vincenti e tecnica sopraffina (la formula Loudness è questa !!). La seguente "No Way Out" molto ipnotica nel suo incedere potrebbe tranquillamente essere un pezzo dei Whitesnake che produrranno 1987 e Slip of the Tongue in virtù di riff stoppati e molto melodici.
La finale "Never Change your Mind" è un lentone di quelli che oggi non vengono più prodotti da nessuna band: arpeggi sognanti, voce potente ma dolce e tanto tanto feeling; anche qua Akira ci delizia con una acrobazia sulla sua E.S.P. facendo un assolo bellissimo memore del Brian May più rock o del Wolf Hoffman di "Metal Heart" (ricordate "Bound to Fail"??).
Qua si conclude uno dei dischi che mi ha dato più emozioni e secondo me il più bel disco dei Loudness.
