Il NYHC mi è sempre sembrato diverso dalla restante scena americana, per diversi motivi che non elencherò quì. Forse però, quello più importante è il fatto che si sviluppò con un po' di ritardo rispetto al resto del paese, ma stà di fatto che le caratteristiche musicali e stilistiche delle New York bands sono ben riconducibili ad un filo conduttore, chiamato appunto NewYorkHardCore.
Molte bands di questo circuito, soprattutto verso la metà degli anni '80, si contraddistinsero per un'attitudine bellicosa e protofascista (Cro-Mags su tutti) e per trasformare i loro concerti i mega risse fra il pubblico e le forze dell'ordine. Negli anni la scena newyorkese si amplierà parecchio integrando stili diversi e mentalità diverse, assimilando anche quella straight edge radicalizzandola parecchio con gruppi del calibro di Youth of Today e Gorilla Biscuits.
I Madball naquero nel 1989 come side-project dei padrini del NYHC, gli Agnostic Front. Alla voce c'era un fanciulletto a nome Freddy Cricien, nient'altro che il fratellino minore di Roger Miret, cantante degli Agnostic Front, alla chitarra Vinnie Stigma, al basso lo stesso Roger Miret ed alla batteria Will Shepler. Questa la formazione di "Ball of destruction" a grandi linee (in alcune songs è presente Matt Henderson alla seconda chitarra) che in seguito cambieranno diverse volte. Questo "Ball of destruction" raccoglie 22 tracce, perlopiù canzoni non utilizzate dagli stessi Agnostic, di Hardcorepunk velocissimo e puro, in perfetta tradizione americana, riconducibili per stile e brevità a "United blood" e "Victims in pain". Non c'è traccia di originalità da un genere che non ne richiede e da una band che non ne ha mai pretesa, quello che interessa ai Madball è spararti nelle gambe queste randellate hardcore che quì sono ancora totalmente scevre di venature metal e metalcore (dioaiutami!!!!!!!il metalcore, ci mancava il metalcore...).
"Colossal man", "I'ts my life", "Get out", "Friend or foe", "We should care" e tutte le altre sono canzoni al fulmicotone da una manciata di secondi che chi ama il NYHC non può non sentire. Nel booklet ci sono le foto di Cricien bambino che canta con la bandana in testa e la t-shirt degli Agnostic!!!
