Mi sembrava doveroso recensire questo doppio DVD degli immensi Manowar, un regalo veramente eccezionale che la band ha fatto ai propri fedelissimi fans nel 2002 e che lascerà a bocca aperta ogni sano metal warrior del pianeta.
Il primo DVD è la seconda puntata dei documentari della serie "Hell On Earth" e vede i nostri impegnati a portare in varie nazioni europee (di cui in questa uscita manca, ahimè l'Italia) il verbo del Vero Metallo (con buona pace di tutti coloro che la pensano in maniera differente: Joey DeMaio e soci non vanno molto per il sottile su questo punto): vengono infatti qui presentati alcuni dei più famosi classici del gruppo interpretati live, tra cui "Guyana", "Hatred", "Battle Hymns" e molti altri (i pezzi proposti sono ben 24!!). Il documentario in questione mira anche a rendere una ulteriore testimonianza dello spirito di fratellanza tra la band e i suoi fans, che si esprime in momenti di vera comunione, ad esempio con la chiamata di chitarristi presi dal pubblico sul palco per suonare con i loro idoli al momento dell'esecuzione dell'anthemica "The Gods Made Heavy Metal". Questo DVD smentisce anche tutte le dicerie sulla presunta mancanza di senso dell'umorismo dei quattro, che vediamo per esempio eseguire per i loro fans francesi una versione power metal della melliflua "Voulez Vous", con tanto di esilaranti gesti ai limiti dell'osceno da parte di Eric Adams ed altre amenità che non vi racconto per non rovinarvi la sorpresa. I contenuti bonus sono una vera manna per i fans dei Kings of Metal perchè comprendono anche una bellissima esecuzione di "Thor" e la versione francase di "Courage".
Ma se il primo DVD vi avesse lasciati per qualche inspiegabile motivo freddi, il secondo è la vera chicca dell'uscita!!Si tratta di un epico concerto tenuto dai quattro al Philips Monsters Of Rock a San Paolo del Brasile nel 1998: avete tra le mani il primo concerto filmato per intero, dall'inizio alla fine, dei Manowar!! Il DVD inizia con una presentazione che mostra fans in delirio e un Joey DeMaio trascinatore che incendia le folle con la sua sola presenza e rilascia interviste che lasciano pochi dubbi sulle intenzioni dei quattro:"This day is the day Manowar will smash the Hammer of Heavy Metal on this ground...", promette lo storico bassista durante un'intervista prima del concerto. Promessa mantenuta!! La band è in forma smagliante e ci tiene a dimostrarlo con una prestazione assolutamente sopra le righe. Eric Adams si conferma vero animale da palcoscenico, carismatico e trascinatore, oltre che singer di grandissimo talento: se in "Louder Than Hell" del 1996 qualcuno poteva essere rimasto dubbioso sulla sua voce (che in quel disco secondo me non riesce ad esprimere completamente le sue enormi capacità), ritroverà qui tutte le proprie incrollabili certezze: il cantante tiene botta dall'inizio alla fine sparando acuti da pelle d'oca. Eccellente anche la prova degli altri tre, ovviamente: in particolare DeMaio è instancabile e regala, udite udite, un assolo di basso al cardiopalma eseguendo "Flight Of The Bumblebee". I pezzi eseguiti sono quelli classici del loro repertorio, ma si segnala in particolare una rarissima versione live di "Gates Of Valhalla". I contenuti bonus sono anche qui molto appetibili e comprendono tra l'altro alcune interviste ai membri dello staff tecnico del gruppo (tra cui John "Dawk" Stillwell), purtroppo in inglese, due pezzi eseguiti al "Ringfest" del 2002 in Germania ("Warriors Of The World" e "House Of Death") ed un'intervista a DeMaio sul concerto, che purtroppo è da leggere (in inglese peraltro!) sullo schermo.
Se amate i Manowar questo è da avere!!
