Entrai dal mio negoziante di fiducia, tanti anni fa: aveva un impianto stereo davvero di pregio. Ingannevole, a volte. Ti poteva anche capitare che sentivi , compravi, tornavi a casa e il disco non era mica cosi' bello come ti era sembrato.. Sara' stata l'acustica del locale, probabilmente. Cosi', quella volta che mise sul piatto (si, c'era ancora il piatto: è proprio tanto tempo fa) questo debutto dei Marjorie Fair del 2004, sapevo che avrei forse dovuto fare la tara.Certo che l'attacco del primo pezzo era di una bellezza struggente..Non c'era mica tanto da pensarci su. Comprai e portai a casa. Bene, quell'intro acustica la annovero ancora come una delle piu' emozionanti, a distanza di secoli. Si trattava di Don't Believe.
I Marjorie Fair di Evan Slamka furono una meteora: il loro primo, rimase il loro ultimo. Non so se ebbero successo, ma non è questo il punto. Di loro, rimane una rara capacità di declinare il sentimento della malinconia in mille gradazioni e sfumature. Spesso usando il registro della ballata, anche nelle modalita' bizzarre di Hold on to you, un po' country ed un po' Bacharach. Con alcuni autentici gioielli: la solida Waves, basso, batteria, chitarra e via viaggiare a velocità insolitamente sostenute, aggrappati al mancorrente della vita per non crollare.., la sognante Please Don't, acustica, voce, delicatezza e tanta, tanta malinconia.. e la conclusiva My Sun Is Setting Over Her Magic, summa di quello che erano i Marjoire Fair.
