Per una come Melanie Chisholm, che ottiene tutto il successo che vuole molto presto, il secondo album solo è un nuovo banco di prova. A volte, essere una star a vent'anni significa non saper gestire al meglio la popolarità e ritrovarsi dopo un po' piena di frustrazioni. "Reason" esce nel 2003, quando Melanie ha 29 anni, e offre un'immagine schietta della cantante inglese, senza tanti fronzoli, in un momento della sua vita in cui è necessario fare ordine. E la soluzione è affidarsi agli altri, cercare conforto e gratificazioni in un rapporto vero ed estraneo da superficialità.
Questo album passa in rassegna alcuni di questi tentativi, a partire dal brano di apertura "Here It Comes Again", pezzo dall'incedere solenne e singolarmente potente per il contesto pop nel quale pur sempre si trova; la voce di Melanie è rugginosa, risulta efficace anche quando intona stilemi della canzone sentimentale che potrebbero sembrare triti ("Non rinunciare a qualcosa che non hai mai avuto prima / non ci sei riuscito ma potremmo riuscirci insieme"). E nella title-track, "Reason", la sua voce è in primo piano, accompagnata dal pianoforte, metafora musicale di due persone che cercano l'intesa ("Ti prego, vieni e portami via / staccami da me stessa per un po' / Forse quando sarò più vecchia / capirò la ragione").
L'album prosegue lungo coordinate pop rock di buon livello ma ci si poteva aspettare qualcosa di più: meno aggressivo del precedente "Northern Star", sia nelle sonorità che nei testi, il disco genera meno hits (anzi, "Here It Comes Again" è forse il solo) e un minor successo di vendite. Non mancano episodi degni di nota, tra i quali "Home" e "Let's Love" nel finale dell'album, con un ritorno ad atmosfere più ruvide segnate dalla presenza delle chitarre, ma nel complesso non si va oltre una discreta fattura e un buon mestiere.
Dopo "Reason", ultima uscita discografica per una major (la Virgin Records), Melanie si mette in proprio fondando una sua etichetta indipendente e assumendosi gli oneri produttivi e distributivi. Curioso percorso dal mainstream all'indie: di solito accade il contrario, ma non a una come lei.
