Finalmente una voce fuori dal coro...e che mi venga un colpo! Sapere che la band in cui milita Carmen Elise Espenaes è addirittura più ispirata di quella della sorella (Liv Kristine, non certo una pivella) è quasi da non credere. Ma la realtà a volte è disarmante; nel 2005 i Midnattsol sono saltati fuori dall'anonimato con un album abbastanza atipico per il mondo del metallo gotico, il debutto discografico per Napalm Records intitolato "Where twilight dwells".
Sappiate che però non è la cantante la vera e propria sorpresa all'interno di questa band tedesca; anzi, c'è da dire che Carmen ha un timbro piuttosto simile a quello della sorella ma, nonostante sia in grado di modulare le melodie delle canzoni in maniera sufficientemente personale, necessita ancora di uno svezzamento vero e proprio (sono però sicuro che il tempo le darà grandi soddisfazioni). Ciò che stupisce veramente è la capacità con la quale la band riesce a giocare all'interno di schemi abusati come quelli del gothic metal con voce femminile, suonando un po' come se i Leaves' Eyes privassero la propria musica di tutti quegli orpelli che rendono i loro album a volte fin troppo pomposi e manieristici. Niente tastiere a profusione dunque, ma tante belle melodie folk (non aspettatevi però climi da sbronze e da festicciole paesane alla maniera dei Korpiklaani); niente riff sincopati d'ultima tendenza alla Within Temptation, ma tanti begli accordi distorti dal retrogusto di metal estremo.
Questi sono i Midnattsol: una forza inarrestabile che travolge nella sua feroce carica chitarristica, congiungendosi con la soavità di una voce particolare, a metà tra quella di una strega e quella di un'infante (il solito cavernoso growl è stato abolito, scelta coraggiosa e meritevole d'applausi), potenti ritmi di doppia cassa e soffusi e mai invadenti sfondi di tastiera. Sbalordisce il fatto che la musica di questa band sia saldamente eretta sulle chitarre (piuttosto irrobustite rispetto ai canoni del genere) anziché sulle tastiere, e che non vengano quasi mai usati strumenti tradizionali o classici per abbellire il tutto. Basta una chitarra acustica e leggiadri episodi di natura folkloristica prendono vita tra una sferzata metallica e l'altra, come un fiore che all'improvviso sbuca attraverso la neve più fitta. Come testimoniato dalla bellissima ambientazione nordica raffigurata in copertina, un'aura di misticismo riconducibile alla mitologia nordica permea ogni singola nota di "Where twilight dwells", immergendo ogni brano in un atmosfera fredda e glaciale, pennellando qua e là, tra gli episodi più riusciti, anche macchie di pura malinconia.
L'opener "Another return" richiede l'headbanging più sfrenato, grazie ad un ritmo granitico e graffiante che accompagna le basse tonalità dell'ugola di Carmen, immergendosi nell'atmosfera notturna e nordica ricreata dalle tastiere, piuttosto sovrastate dagli altri strumenti; ma la successiva "Lament" è ancora più rocciosa, veloce, trascinante. Per le orchestrazioni in sottofondo sono chiamati in causa i Battlelore più malefici, nonché i cugini Leaves' Eyes per il bel ritornello melodico. "Unpayable silence" è invece la prima traccia che presenta ritmi rallentati e bellissimi arpeggi di chitarra acustica, sui quali la giovane singer è in grado di esprimersi al meglio, intonando litanie folk dal palpabile mood malinconico, slegandosi inoltre dai paragoni un po' ingombranti delle tracce precedenti. Nella seconda parte intervengono le chitarre elettriche e tutti gli elementi del sound dei Midnattsol si fondono per regalare momenti di pura magia. Una canzone così eccellente non si sentiva da tempo. "Haunted" preme nuovamente sull'acceleratore, ma è ormai chiaro che la band riesce a dare il meglio nelle tracce più lente, con le sue intense ballate nordiche. Il meglio arriva infatti con "Tarefall" e la lunga "Tapt av hap" che riprendono il discorso semi-acustico tracciato dal terzo brano in scaletta. È davvero un peccato che negli altri episodi l'amalgama tra componente acustica e quella elettronica non abbia dato origine a melodie altrettanto sentite ed emozionanti, nonostante tutti i pezzi siano ben strutturati e coinvolgenti (su tutti gli episodi più metallici del platter mi preme ricordare l'oscura "Infinita fairytale"), a dimostrazione di uno stile che vive di luce propria.
Non siamo dunque davanti ad un capolavoro, ma ad un debutto più che gradito e molto più che sufficiente. "Where twilight dwells" è un album che forse non ha le carte per passare alla storia, ma da sfoggio di una classe non comune e merita almeno d'essere ascoltato da tutti coloro che amano il folk metal dalle tinte gotiche. Bisogna inoltre dire che in mezzo a tante band più anziane colpite da improvvisi cali d'ispirazione o dalle sempre più imperanti velleità commerciali, notare che ci sono ancora musicisti ispirati e passionali, è davvero piacevole e gratificante per l'ascoltatore. Per questo motivo i Midnattsol sono una realtà da tenere d'occhio; chissà che in futuro non ci regalino un lavoro ancora più bello. Per come la vedo io, i presupposti ci sono tutti.
