1974. Minnie Riperton e il suo delizioso cono gelato in copertina, sono un invito irresistibile ad assaggiare questo vecchio album di verace musica Soul.
Il soul è quello vivido, immaginifico, brillante dei primi anni 70, anni in cui imperava senza rivali il sound Motown, proprio in quel periodo all'inizio di un'inarrestabile fase calante dal punto di vista creativo, per colpa dei machiavellici manager della casa discografica che trasformarono pian pianino la stessa Motown (e di conseguenza la musica da essa partorita) in una catena di montaggio di album tutti uguali da vendere come hamburger al famelico pubblico bianco.
Ma dallo sterco nascono i fiori, diceva qualcuno, e allora nel pieno di questa esplosione di Soul-mania e coadiuvata dal genio senza se e senza ma di Stevie Wonder (produttore del disco e autore di due brani) Minnie Riperton tira fuori questo semi capolavoro dal titolo "perfect angel".
La Riperton, questo piccolo angelo della musica soul, entra ed esce da ogni canzone in punta di piedi, ma lasciando un segno ben preciso, individuabile. Il fulcro centrale, la forza propulsiva dell'album è proprio la voce leggiadra e soave di questa ragazza dallo sguardo ammiccante e innocente, in grado di smuovere anche un cuore di pietra.
La sua forza espressiva, almeno direttamente proporzionale alla sua fragilità emotiva, imprime in ogni brano una tangibilità e una concretezza, una fisionomia così propria e definita da risultare struggente ed eccitante ascolto dopo ascolto sempre un po' di più.
Minnie Riperton nell'arco di nove splendidi brani (dei quali è anche co-autrice) alterna suadenti amenità amorose come "perfect Angel" e "Lovin' you" (n.1 negli States), cinguetta spensierata splendidi gioiellini pop dalle tinte pastello come "seeing you this way" o "everytime he comes around", e sporca il suo soul di rock con la magnifica "reasons", colorando il tutto con la sua incantevole ugola da cinque ottave e mezzo, dolce e graffiante al tempo stesso, "Soul" fino al midollo.
Questo è un album da consigliare a tutti senza riserve, brillante, orecchiabile, un mix di musica elettrizzante e profonda, frutto del magnifico talento troppo presto strappato via da un cancro inesorabile di quel "perfect angel" dallo sguardo birichino che capeggia in copertina.
