Richard Melville, in arte Moby, in questo 2005 torna sotto le luci della ribalta con questa sua nuova fatica discografica: l’album Hotel.
Dopo il mezzo passo falso di 18, mera copia, tra l’altro parecchio malriuscita, di quello splendido lavoro intitolato Play, il nostro dj newyorchese decide di cambiare rotta rompendo gli indugi e abbandonando quelle sonorità che avevano caratterizzato Play e gli avevano donato il successo. Questo Hotel è infatti tutto incentrato su canzoni dalla forma squisitamente pop. Ma non fraintendetemi! Il nostro Moby non è tipo da fare canzoncine in salsa electro-pop da due soldi, in fondo fa il dj da una vita, vive con e per la musica, gli scorre nelle vene. Semplicemente in quest’album il suo estro e la smodata capacità di creare melodie e tappeti elettronici di classe sono totalmente asservite alla realizzazione dell’unico obbiettivo di una facile orecchiabilità dei pezzi.
Moby venduto? Anche lui si è totalmente arreso al music business? (come l’uso di lift me up per lo spot di una famosa compagnia telefonica nostrana dimostrerebbe inequivocabilmente?)
NO, semplicemente il nostro eclettico dj sapeva che era ora di cambiare aria, di tornare su terreni più conosciuti, di mostrare come anche le canzoncine pop possono avere un’anima.
Si, perché queste 14 motivi che compongono hotel, per quanto incredibilmente facili da assimilare, se ascoltate con attenzione, mostrano tutto un sottobosco di suoni ragionati, melodie studiate, strumenti ottimamente amalgamati, atmosfere ricercate. Come per esempio la delicata "Temptation", giro di chitarra, piano e il battere lento e costante di una batteria, il tutto impreziosito dalla voce di Laura Dawn che scandisce questa ballata moderna. Atmosfere malinconiche caratterizzano anche la splendida "Where you end", con al microfono la voce di Moby (che in quest’album è spesso presente al canto), e che dire di "Love should"? Si alternano a questi momenti malinconicamente cupi canzoni più movimentate come "Very", in bilico tra ritmi dance e forma pop, o "I like it", in cui l’anima trip-hop di Moby crea un pezzo degno di un’album di triky o Massive attack o ancora il tormentone "lift me up" o ancora "beautiful", canzone pronta a dargli il cambio.
Certo, quello che ne esce fuori non è nulla di innovativo, ma non si può sempre ricercare la sperimentazione, a volte alle nostre orecchie piace essere ammaliate da suoni catchy, e se questi sono opera di uno che ci sa davvero fare, tanto meglio.
In conclusione un album che farà parlare di se, per me un ottimo lavoro electro-pop, il nostro Moby ha indubbiamente talento. Non merita chissa’ che voti, ma si lascia ascoltare e non annoia mai.
