Dannazione! mi sono perso questo disco quando è uscito nel 1987. L'avessi ascoltato allora, una canzone come "(Please) lose yourself in me" mi avrebbe fatto schizzare dalla sedia. Da sola giustificherebbe l'esistenza di questo album, forse il meno noto della discografia dei My Bloody Valentine. In contemporanea a questo era uscito il 12" "Strawberry Wine", canzone che, a corroborarne il titolo, ti fa ubriacare senza che te ne renda conto, per come ti imbriglia in un pastoso e languido jingle-jangle chitarristico contraddistinto dal sensuale contrappunto vocale della tenera Belinda Butcher.
Dunque, facciamo un po' d'ordine: il disco in questione è stato pubblicato nel 1989, ma è praticamente la somma algebrica del 12" "Strawberry Wine" e dell'EP "Ecstasy", entrambi di due anni prima. Prima di questi i My Bloody Valentine avevano pubblicato una serie di Mini-LP contraddistinti da un puro suono garage. Il primo, irreperibile "This is your Bloody Valentine", pubblicato dalla tedesca Tycon nel 1985 solo in Germania, è puro esercizio di scuola sixties-punk, con innesti fuzztonici e qualche virata sul più morbido stile dei Doors. Il secondo "Geek" dello stesso anno ripete l'esperimento, facendoci intuire che la passione iniziale di Shields e soci si rivolgeva non a quanto accadeva in Inghilterra, ma al più caotico e primitivo suono delle origini riscoperto a quel tempo grazie a gente come i Fuzztones e, prima ancora, Cramps. Solo con il successivo MLP "The New Record Of My Bloody Valentine" ed il 12" "Sunny Sundae Smile", i nostri cambiano atteggiamento e si adeguano alle sonorità domestiche di scuola Creation e Postcard, ossia un pop più tranquillo ed accomodante palesato in quel periodo dai caposcuola Smiths e, a seguire, Pastels e Joseph K. E' anche indubbia l'influenza esercitata dai Jesus and Mary Chain, ma di loro, paradossalmente, è stata recepita solo la polpa: puro pop incontaminato, ripulito dal caos di feedback che d'altra parte stava scemando anche dai loro indiscussi propietari: "Darklands" dei J&MC di quell'anno è esemplare per come sgrezza il loro sound senza alterarlo. Solo successivamente i MBV riprenderanno in considerazione il muro di chitarre per concepire "Isn't Anything" ed il capolavoro "Loveless".
"Ecstasy and Wine" è pertanto un lavoro di transizione senza infamia e senza lode. Innocente indie-pop come già circolava sotto forma di 45 giri di Primitives, Primal Scream, Shop Assistants su cui però già si innestava un vago sentore di Velvet Underground e i celebri giochi di chitarre che diventeranno la cifra stilistica del quartetto in avvenire, cominciavano a fare capolino (capolino. che bella parola!). Preme comunque consigliare questo album perchè include "Strawberry Wine", "Clair" e la sorprendente ancor oggi "(Please) lose yourself in me", indefinibile, assassina canzone dal ritmo circolare ed ammaliante che starebbe bene su Loveless con un adeguato trattamento chitarristico come sappiamo i My Bloody Valentine sanno fare.
Aspettiamo la prossima uscita, che si dice imminente, e - scommetto - sarà un'ennesima sorpesa.
