Il primo album solista di Neil Young era uscito nel 1968 e si chiamava soltanto "Neil Young". Non era venuto benissimo, troppe sovraincisioni lo avevano notevolmente appesantito, nonostante alcune canzoni pregevoli. Era insomma un album che lasciava soltanto intravvedere quello che sarebbe successo dopo.
Subito dopo l'uscita del disco, Neil, non soddisfatto dell'album, va a vedere un concerto di un gruppo chiamato Rockets (attenzione, non quelli dei tardi '70 vestiti da astronauti), e resta folgorato dal sound elettricissimo e ruvido di questo nuovo gruppo. In particolare si crea subito un'amicizia con il chitarrista Danny Whitten, e li invita nel suo studio per fare alcune prove. Durante queste prove la scintilla scocca a tal punto che Neil, nel giro di un pomeriggio, scrive tre canzoni che diventeranno dei veri capolavori della sua vastissima produzione: "Cowgirl in the Sand", "Cinnamon Girl" e "Down by the River". Le canzoni vengono tutte registrate in studio in presa diretta e, nel giro di cinque-sei giorni, viene fuori un album che resta a tutt'oggi una delle vette assolute di Neil Young, sette canzoni perfette nella loro imperfezione, nel senso che il sound è sporco, ruvido, elettrico, le chitarre vengono lasciate libere di andare in feedback (ed è una delle prime volte che succede su un disco in studio, d'accordo, c'era già Hendrix, ma la cosa non era tanto usuale allora), Billy Talbot e Ralph Molina offrono un impianto ritmico puntuale ed essenziale, Neil e Danny improvvisano a piacere, soprattutto sui pezzi lunghi, ed è un piacere sentirli.
Oltre alle canzoni già citate, in particolare "Down by the River" è una delle mie preferite di sempre, un pezzo fantastico che, nonostante superi gli 8 minuti di lunghezza, mi fa venire voglia di risentirlo in continuazione, c'è anche una ballata acustica strepitosa, "Round and Round", inoltre la stessa title-track, un esempio di country-rock elettrico tutto rigorosamente in presa diretta. Un album urgente, di quelli scritti e registrati di getto e, come tutte le cose urgenti, realmente importante e soprattutto fondamentale per la carriera di Neil Young, che di lì a poco si unirà a Crosby, Stills & Nash per uno dei più celebrati supergruppi della storia del rock.
