I Nile, divenuti un caposaldo dell'attuale scena musicale cosiddetta "estrema", nascono nel 1993 per volere del chitarrista, cantante e principale song-writer Karl Sanders; da allora fino ad oggi, la band americana, originaria della South Carolina, ha proposto un tecnicissimo Brutal Death Metal caratterizzato da melodie dalle forti tinte orientaleggianti e dalle liriche ispirate all'antico Egitto e agli scritti di Lovecraft (per chi ancora non lo conoscesse, autore ottocentesco inglese i cui lavori sono impregnati di esoterismo e misticismo). Nonostante la poetica sandersiana non sia variata gran chè nel corso del tempo, si percepisce una progressiva crescita a livello tecnico abbastanza omogenea da lavoro a lavoro: dall'album d'esordio, il qui recensito "Amongst the catacombs of Nephren-Ka" (1998) al recente e tecnicamente mostruoso "Ityphallic" (2007), i cambi di line-up sono stati inoltre sostanziali.
Questo primo lavoro (frutto degli sforzi congiunti del chitarrista Karl Sanders, il bassista Chief Spires e il batterista Pete Hammoura, che si occupano tutti anche delle parti vocali) rappresenta probabilmente quello dalla personalità più grezza e immediata. I succitati salienti tratti dello stile dei Nile sono già tutti presenti; pur non raggiungendo la complessità tecnico-compositiva dei suoi successori (pezzi più corti, arrangiamenti di batteria meno complessi), il disco si attesta su livelli comunque eccezionali da questo punto di vista: riff complicatissimi, tempi dispari, tremolo e sweep picking a profusione, assoli super-veloci, drumming furioso caratterizzato dal massiccio uso della doppia cassa a cui il gruppo è sempre più ricorso col passare degli anni. Non è però soltanto l'aspetto tecnico a colpire prepotentemente di quest'opera: essa si caratterizza infatti di un intenso fascino oscuro, a tratti epico, dalle reminescenze esoteriche, fascino che rende questa band davvero non comune nella scena di cui fa parte; dal punto di vista musicale, particolari come il growling bestiale, alternato da ben tre voci, l'accordatura bassissima (Drop-La), le armonie arabeggianti, i frequenti momenti strumentali dal tiro folk-ambient, l'utilizzo di strumenti alternativi, non possono che contribuire all'atmosfera dominante. Questa miscela caratterizzante il Nile-suono si manifesta pienamente in pezzi come l'opener Smashing The Antiu, Barra Edinazzu, Serpent Headed Mask, e soprattutto in Ramses Bringer of War (il pezzo dal tiro più epico, basti ascoltare l'intro con tanto di percussioni e fiati da guerra), Opening of The Mouth, e la conclusiva Beneath Eternal Oceans of Sand.
In definitiva, questo "Amongst.." è il disco meno tecnico dei Nile (per quanto di pochezza tecnica si possa parlare nel caso di un loro lavoro), ma ciò non sminuisce la sua bellezza, frutto della fatica di musicisti in gamba che hanno saputo creare una propria originale e personalissima proposta, cosa ultimamente rara, perfino nell'ambito della musica estrema; quindi, a tutti gli amanti e non della quale, personalmente ritengo caldamente consigliabile l'ascolto di questo album.
