Dopo il fulminante debutto "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka"datato 1998 i Nile ritornano due anni dopo con questo "Black Seeds of Vengeance"; il primo passo concreto verso la consacrazione, che li porterà, con lo straordinario "In Their Darkened Shrines", ad entrare di diritto nell'olimpo dei grandi della musica estrema.
Il primo dato da registrare è l'entrata in formazione, accanto al leader Kearl Sanders (Voce e chitarra), a Chief Spires (Voce e Basso) e al mostruoso Pete Hammoura (Batteria e Voce), del talentuoso chitarrista Dallas Toler-Wade e del tentacolare drummer Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal, Malevolent Creation e Aurora Borealis fra gli altri); quest'ultimo in veste di special guest.
Rispetto all'esordio il gruppo si focalizza ancora di più sulla velocità e sull'impatto, facendo comunque registrare un songwriting ispirato, maturo e complesso. Le caratteristiche del suono Nile ci sono tutte: growls ultracatacombali (alla voce si alternano un pò tutti i membri), un riffing complicatissimo assemblato praticamente con assoli, melodie provenienti dall'antico Egitto (molte parti vengono suonate con tipici strumenti musicali egiziani), doppia cassa lanciata a velocità siderali. Ebbene si, i Nile con la loro personalissima musica uniscono la ferocia del brutal-death a momenti atmosferici di rara bellezza che riescono a coinvolgere totalmente l'ascoltare.
La title-track (che parte dopo una tranquilla intro) dovrebbe essere abbastanza chiara in proposito: il consueto assalto sonoro dei nostri viene spezzato da una parte finale molto epica con in sottofondo un drumming militaresco. Da segnalare anche "The Black Flame" con il suo riff doom iniziale (riff che verrà ripreso di peso e rielaborato successivamente nella song "Sarcophagus" da "InTheir Darkened Shrines") che prepara l'ascoltatore ad una devastazione auricolare notevole, "Defiling The Gates of Ishtar", veramente brutale nel suo incedere, la cadenzata "Masturbatining The War of God" che presenta nel finale spaventose accelerazioni, la lunghissima "To Dream of Ur" dove l'impressione è quella di trovarsi nel bel mezzo di un rito funebre egiziano, con un sacerdote in preda a chissà quale possessione demoniaca. Sanders e soci piazzano in mezzo a tanta brutalità anche una song acustica-strumentale come "Libation unto The Shades Who Lurk in the Shadows of the Temple of Anhur" per riprendere fiato. La chiusura e affidata all'ipnotico ed ossessivo mantra di "Khetti Satha Shemsu" dove tra i numerosi guest vocalist spunta pure Ross Dolan degli Immolation. Al di sopra della norma la prova di tutti i membri: la coppia d'asce Sanders/Toler-Wade è veramente instancabile nel creare riff veloci e tecnicissimi (innumerevoli i cambi di tempo all'interno do ogni canzone), Hammoura e Roddy sono due batteristi semplicementi spettacolari (sentite la tecnica sulle rullate e sull'utilizzo dei piatti). Ovviamente non mi dilungo sui testi , tutti criptici e particolari, che hanno come riferimento l'antica civiltà egizia e tutto ciò che la riguarda.
Un disco assolutamente da avere per comprendere la recente evoluzione del death metal. Almeno attualmente non vedo agguerritissimi rivali all'orizzonte...
