Famosi in terra d'Albione ma praticamente sconosciuti negli Stati Uniti, gli hollywoodiani Orson giungono alla prova del fuoco del secondo album.
"Culture Vultures" segue lo scoppiettante esordio "Bright Idea", che qualche consenso l'ha pure ottenuto, permettendo alla band di conquistare un premio quale "Best International Breakthrough Act" ai Brit Awards del 2007 oltreché un'apparizone al "Concert For Diana" del primo Luglio scorso e una serie di date come band di supporto di Duran Duran e Robbie Williams .
L'improvviso successo ottenuto dalla band (comunque non di primo pelo, avendo alle spalle sette anni di gavetta e tre cambi di nome) è dovuto sicuramente all'efficace formula pop rock proposta, frutto di influenze ben miscelate tra loro e di una cura maniacale nella ricerca del ritornello ad effetto, che ha procurato alla band più di una hit estratta dal precedente disco (alcune, come le scintillanti "No Tomorrow" e "Happiness", ben funzionanti pure qua da noi).
La musica degli Orson pesca a piene mani dal miglior pop rock degli ultimi trent'anni senza aggiungere niente di particolare o innovativo (al massimo qualche tastiera qua e là, o qualche falsetto del bravo vocalist Jason Pebworth), anzi mettendo in mostra una sana attitudine festaiola, ben rappresentata nel disco in questione da una piccola perla dance rock come il primo singolo "Ain't No Party" (contente qualche richiamo a "Crosstown Traffic" di Jimi Hendrix).
Non si fanno mancare veramente niente: in "Radio" e "The Contortionist" le chitarre viaggiano dritte e "quadrate" senza particolari scossoni, delineando melodie compatte e formalmente perfette, rigorosamente intorno ai tre/quattro minuti di durata. Inoltre ci sono le reminescenze stonesiane di "Little Miss Lost And Found" e la classica ballatona da accendini ("Where You Are Tonight"), il rockettino scazzato à la Strokes di "Broken Radio" (praticamente una "Last Nite" parte seconda) e l'immancabile, smaccata autocitazione ("Northern Girl" ricorda da vicino la vecchia "Bright Idea").
Aggiungete alla ricetta il funky flavour di "Cool Cops" e gli U2 più edulcorati e danzerecci della chiusura "Everybody" ed il gioco è fatto.
Un lavoro che non pretende di rivoluzionare proprio nulla, questo è chiaro, ma di certo permette di passare una quarantina di minuti leggeri e spensierati, battendo il piedino a tempo più di una volta.
Per stupire, però, bisogna fare qualcosa in più.
