Eccoci qui, finalmente il tanto atteso nuovo album dei Papa Roach è arrivato, io personalmente non vedevo l’ora, da grande fan e drogato di loro musica. Il disco si intitola “The Paramour Sessions”, in onore dei Paramour Studios, in California, presso i quali è avvenuta la registrazione del disco. Location molto suggestiva da come appaiono nel booklet del cd.
Ma iniziamo a parlare di questo ottimo nuovo lavoro dei quattro di Vacaville. Il cd si apre con il primo singolo “To Be Loved”, traccia che racchiude il tipico sound del gruppo, molto potente e orecchiabile. Segue senza calare di potenza la potentissima “Alive” che si apre con riff duri accompagnati dalla graffiante voce di Shaddix che arricchisce uno dei più significativi pezzi dell’album. La batteria di Davi Buckner non lascia fuggire neppure per un attimo le corde aggressive di Jerry Horton dando loro un ritmo incalzante. Poi “Crash” che si apre in modo molto cupo, con la voce in tono dark che poi esplode in un potente ritornello, fatto di un cantato urlato e di riff secchi e sound scorrevole e graffiante. “The world around you” rallenta un pò il ritmo ma non placa l’aggressività, che si sfoga sui ritornelli, “Forever” è uno dei pezzi più belli dell’album, caratterizzata da un sound rilassante e riflessivo, che sfocia sul ritornello in una splendida prova vocale di Shaddix, melodica ma molto rock allo stesso tempo. “I Dewise My Own Demise”, piccola curiosità, si apre come “What Happened To Us” degli Hoobastank, la batteria parte in modo totalmente uguale, poi cambia direzione e regala un’altra traccia potente e coinvolgente tipica del gruppo. La voce ottima cambia tonalità di continuo con facilità imbarazzante ed il ritmo delle percussioni rallenta ed incalza dall’inizio alla fine. “Time is Running Out” dà prova delle nuove influenze mainstream a cui ci stanno abituando i Papa Roach, la canzone è molto orecchiabile ed il sound si distacca d’improvviso da quello degli altri pezzi, senza però perdere in qualità. “What Do You Do” è la ballata pura dell’album, dal sound che ricorda quello di alcuni pezzi degli Aerosmith, peraltro in alcuni tratti, sembra quasi di sentire la voce di Steven Tyler e qui potrete anche criticare ma Shaddix non ha nulla da invidiare alla voce di Tyler. Il timbro graffiante accompagna il bel sound della canzone che, pur allontanadosi dal carattere Nu-Metal proprio della band, regala emozioni.
“My Heart Is A Fist” ha un carattere un pò anonimo ma comunque da un’altra prova delle ottime capacità vocali del frontman e della qualità del gruppo, che anche in questo episodio riesce a creare un sound molto pulito e graffiante allo stesso tempo. L’anima rock lascia spazio in conclusione ad un assolo vocale accompagnato da morbide note di pianoforte. “No more Secrets” spezza quell’alone riflessivo che si era creato nei pezzi precedenti, dando una nuova sferzata fatta di riff energici e voce galoppante. “Reckless” è un’altra ballad, a cui ormai siamo abituati, ancora sound molto gradevole come il pezzo nel complesso. “The Fire” ci ricorda che qualcosa è cambiato, riproponendo un carattere più pacato ed un sound non molto aggressivo ma comunque non disdegnabile. “Roses On My Grave” è l’ultimo pezzo ufficiale dell’album e la penultima traccia. E’ una canzone che può piacere oppure no, nel senso che è molto particolare e vi spiego subito perchè. La voce di Shaddix è accompagnata per tutto il pezzo da un’orchestra, che produce una melodia stupenda, fatta soprattutto di archi, che nel ritornello lasciano spazio alla chitarra di Horton. Il risultato è stato nel mio caso, da pelle d’oca, ciò che ne esce è davvero originale, anche pensando al cambiamento a cui il gruppo si sta sottoponendo. La canzone è un’episodio breve, però è uno di quei pezzi da ascoltare mille volte, rilassa e scuote e le parole entrano in testa subito. Mi sono venuti in mente i Metallica ed il loro concerto con la San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Mi rendo conto che il paragone è audace ma la scelta del sound ricorda quel concerto.
Il disco si conclude con la versione live di “Scars”, registrata durante il concerto del 1 maggio 2005 a Chicago, location presso la quale è stato registrato il primo dvd del gruppo, “Live and Murderous in Chicago”. La canzone è eseguita ottimamente, come egregiamente il quartetto si è comportato durante tutto il live (ve lo dico perchè sono in possesso del dvd). L’unica pecca sta nel fatto che questa versione live di Scars, è molto più lenta rispetto a quella del cd. Per il resto tutti i pezzi live sono eseguiti in modo impeccabile ma personalmente non avrei scelto questo come ultima traccia del nuovo cd.
In conclusione, per quanto mi riguarda ritengo che questo nuovo album meriti cinque stelle, nonostante ci sia qualche pecca come ad esempio la sopracitata scelta dell’ultima traccia o una o due ballad un pò tirate. Ma ritengo che nel complesso il lavoro sia ottimo, poi è opinabile pensare che un cambio di rotta nel sound, possa fare bene ad un gruppo oppure no. In questo caso io (e sottolineo io) ritengo che questo mutamento abbia dato nuova qualità ai Papa Roach, che in questo album regalano aggressività e carattere ma anche riflessione e melodia. Il quartetto sta crescendo, lo si capisce anche dalla qualità dei testi, che agli esordi erano totalmente “facili” ed ora mostrano più maturità. In fondo a me loro piacciono così. Poi ognuno la vede a proprio modo.
