Probabilmente c’è un grosso equivoco che rovina le nostre vite: quello per cui la musica “pop” allo stato puro non possa essere grande musica. E già che ci siamo, cari estremisti indie-rockers, sfatiamo pure il mito per cui “se piace a tutti, fa cagare”. Perché questo dischetto piacerà anche - non dico ai vostri amici, ma – alle vostre AMICHE: e rimane un bel dischetto.
Certo, ancora non ci credete, ma già vi state chiedendo “sì, vabbè, ma di che si tratta?” Ma di catchy, honest pop music that creates a feeling of euphoria in humans, ed è vero anche se sta scritto sul loro sito! Sto parlando di gemme melodiche (Live by the water, Just to see you), sprazzi di college-pop (We’ve got all night), autentici inni (oops scusate, ANTHEMS) adolescenziali (Words to sing), e momenti di power-pop-meets-beach-boys (Sing about me)!!!
Ma soprattutto, quest’album contiene Say goodbye, ovvero LaPerfettaCanzonePop. La canzone che è la traccia numero 2 di qualunque compilation io abbia fatto negli ultimi 10 anni. Un pezzo che è perversamente, sdolcinatamente bello, e che vi troverete a canticchiare persino mentre cambiate la gomma bucata sulla tangenziale e fuori piove. Se qualche indie-rocker dal cuore duro ancora non si è convinto, rifletta sul fatto che - l’album è del 1992 come Slanted & Enchanted dei Pavement - i Papas Fritas sono in tre come gli Husker Du - incidono per un’etichetta che dire indipendente è un eufemismo - batterista è una donna che inoltre canta - hanno suonato in tour con i Flaming Lips.
