Dopo vent'anni passati a sfornare a getto continuo canzoni splendide e albums sia con i Beatles che con i Wings ricchi di spunti interessanti, il 1983 vede McCartney pubblicare un lavoro decisamente mediocre, privo delle atmosfere coinvolgenti e appassionanti dei suoi lavori precedenti . In realtà l'album non è nient'altro che un disco completato con pezzi scartati da "Tug Of War", quelli composti per l'occasione sono per lo più stanchi esercizi o squallidi duetti , come "Say Say Say" con Jackson o l'insulsa "The Man". Si salva la sola "Pipes Of Peace", ottima ballad contraddistinta da una base musicale di piano supportata nel suo incedere dai capolini del Moog, la melodia sfocia poi in una marcetta su cui si inserisce il coro per il ritornello, canzone splendida, finita in un lavoro disastroso, memorabile il video.
"Keep Under Cover" è uno scarto risalente alle ultime sessions dei Wings, caotico e scontato, ma piacevole, "So Bad", cantata in falsetto da Paul con Ringo alla batteria e Eric Stewart alla chitarra è semplicemente brutta, con un testo infantile , lontano anni luce dai migliori di McCartney. Il resto è routine, una ripresa di "Tug Of War", "Tug Of Peace", un altro scarto dei Wings, "Average Person", brano mosso, ultima comparsa di Denny Laine nella vita di McCartney, il loro rapporto finisce molto male a causa della compagna del musicista, guarda caso giapponese, che è mal sopportata dai McCartney, e che spingerà Laine a raccontare la vita privata di Paul e Linda al "The Sun". L'edizione del 1993 aggiunge "We All Stand Together", dal film a cartoni "Rupert The Bear", parte di un lavoro molto più ampio abortito da Paul, recuperabile solo su Bootleg. Che dire ascoltato oggi appare nettamente come il lavoro minore del suo catalogo, e pensare che Paul doveva pubblicare il tanto atteso "Cold Cuts" al suo posto, disco di inediti molto interessante ancora oggi in attesa di pubblicazione.
