"Tug Of War" doveva essere, probabilmente, l'ultimo album dei Wings, infatti McCartney affidò la produzione del disco al fedele George Martin che doveva rispolverare così un po' il vecchio sound del gruppo. Martin però obbligò Paul a sbarazzarsi di almeno del batterista Steve Holly e del giovane Laurence Juber e rifiutò (per scarsa qualità del materiale) una prima versione dell'album.
Alla fine dopo tante peripezie il disco vede la luce nel 1982 accreditato solo a Paul. In realtà è a tutti gli effetti ancora un disco dei Wings, Linda e Denny Laine suonano in tutti i brani, solo che Martin ha preferito allargare l'esecuzione ad altri musicisti, quali Ringo Starr, Steve Gadd e Eric Stewart coronando il tutto poi con la collaborazione di Steve Wonder.
Qualitativamente parlando non è un grande lavoro, a tratti serpeggia già minacciosa la crisi creativa che colpirà Paul da lì a poco; la title track è una buona ballata, una metafora degli eterni conflitti dell'umanità simboleggiati da un eterno tiro alla fune, "Tug Of War" appunto.
Altro grande brano, caratterizzato da un notevole canto a due voci che si rincorrono per tutta la canzone, è "Wanderlust", peccato che finirà presto nel dimenticatoio di Sir Paul.
Curiosa la collaborazione con Carl Perkins in "Get It", banale e arci nota invece quella con Wonder in "Ebony And Ivory"; coronano il tutto pezzi piacevoli ma poco incisivi e qualche caduta di tono, come la fin troppo orecchiabile con sound decisamente '80 "Take It Away".
Un disco sofferto dunque, per vari motivi, uno su tutti la morte di Lennon a cui è dedicata la splendida "Here Today". Gli Ottanta per il Macca saranno molto difficili e brutti lavori come "Pipes Of Peace" e "Press To Play" indeboliranno la sua credibilità , ma il riscatto grazie al buon Costello lo riconsegnerà di diritto in piena forma alla storia della musica.
