Finalmente un gran bell'album. Lo confesso, è trascorso molto tempo dall'ultima volta in cui mi è capitato di pronunciare una simile sentenza nei confronti di un album metal. Quando i Pestilence pubblicarono questo "Spheres", nell'ormai lontano 1993, io non ero altro che un bavoso marmocchio, che di certo non si sarebbe mai interessato della scena musicale di quegli anni. Tanto più se si parla di death metal. Accanto alla solite cagate commerciali, piccole e grandi, fioriva sotto un velo di indifferenza un nuovo sottogenere, chiamato volgarmente jazz-metal. Che nome grottesco! I critici coniarono questa definizione non sapendo come classificare quella strana e incompresa musica divulgata da gruppi floridiani come Atheist e Cynic, nella quale la violenza fine a se stessa si lascia plasmare e rimodellare da una indiscussa perizia tecnica. Anche i Pestilence, appunto, capitanati dal chitarrista Patrick Mameli, non rinunciano a recitare la loro parte in questo ambiente così talentuoso.
Capitanati dal chitarrista e cantante Patrick Mameli, i Pestilence, dopo aver dimostrato tutta la loro brutalità e abilità nei primi "Malleus Maleficarum" (1988), "Consuming Impulse" (1989) e dopo aver gettato nuove promesse per una innovazione del sound con "Testimony of the Ancients" (1991), continuano imperterriti a sfuggire di fronte ad ogni tentativo di classificazione, stupendo ancora una volta il mercato discografico con un prodotto irripetibile. Oltre agli assodati Patrick Uterwijk (chitarra) e Marco Foddis (batteria), il gruppo arruola il bassista Jeroen Paul Thesseling, le cui indiscusse capacità tecniche si assemblano magnificamente a quelle dei compagni in ogni brano.
Il risultato è un sound unico, mai così raffinato e incantevole, merito dei pickup digitali utilizzati per deformare le partiture. E qui apriamo una parentesi. Conservatore come sono, questa storia delle chitarre "troppo artificiali" mi puzzava un po', dal momento che sono più incline alle sfuriate nude e crude della più ferrea tradizione thrash. Ho dovuto ricredermi notando la mancanza di un tastierista nella formazione. Ma come? Il disco è pieno di aperture melodiche, sparse qua e là anche all'interno dei singoli pezzi, sensuali ed efficaci nella loro falsa semplicità. Merito di qualche turnista in sala di registrazione? Macchè. L'elegante opera di quei quattro ragazzi olandesi con i rispettivi tradizionali strumenti catapultano le orecchie dell'ascoltatore in un viaggio onirico, attraverso l'ignoto regno della mente umana. Sogni, visioni, realtà si intrecciano nei testi equivoci di Foddis, in tensioni poetico-musicali esaltanti rintracciabili in tracce come "Personal Energy", la title track "Spheres", la potente "Mind Reflections" o "Changing Perspectives", tanto per citare qualche nome. Eccezionali le strumentali "Voices From Within" e "Phileas", degne di nota per il semplice fatto di essere stupende, pur nella loro breve durata.
"Spheres" è tutto questo, e molto altro. Scoprirlo sarà un piacere, amarlo un dovere.
Vivamente consigliato a chi ama la musica, totalmente inaccessibile alla massa.
