Nati a metà degli anni '80 in Olanda come gruppo thrash fin dagli esordi abbastanza tecnico, soprattutto per merito dei due axe men Patrick Mameli e Patrick Uterwijk, i Pestilence si sono via via trasformati in un act di techno death, al pari degli Atheist, dei Cynic e dei Death del compianto Chuck Schuldiner. "Testimony ..." è sicuramente il loro lavoro più quadrato, intenso ed elaborato, nonostante il successivo "Spheres" in quanto ad elaborazione e complicatezza non sia da meno, ma in questo caso siamo su altri lidi musicali che in seguito porteranno al prematuro split della band.
Edito nel 1991 "Testimony..." fu accolto molto positivamente dalla stampa, anche grazie ad una struttura molto articolata (ogni song ha una intro strumentale assai anomala e allucinata) ed all'inserimento massiccio di tastiere che conferiscono all'album un mood molto orrorifico, che per i tempi fu sicuramente l'apice dell'originalità che il death metal potesse esprimere. Da rimarcare poi la presenza di Tony Choy dei Cynic al basso e la meravigliosa produzione, che non ha per niente snaturato l'agilità e la secchezza del classico suono Pestilence, mixando perfettamente presenza e corpo di tutti gli strumenti.
Si parte subito forte con l'opener "The Secrecies of Horror", riffing thrash tagliente e nervoso, vocals in stile Obituary, magnifica apertura centrale con spettrali tastiera a conferire profondità al tutto. Un bel modo per iniziare.
Quindi uno dei gioielli dell'album: "Twisted Truth", song che mette in evidenza le capacità tecniche solistiche del duo Mameli/Uterwijk su sottofondo degno di un gruppo AOR, per poi riesplodere furiosa e cangiante. Davvero un gran bel brano.
Headbanging furioso per la successiva "Lost soul", song death molto elaborata, sulfurea, con l'ottimo lavoro di Tony Choy al basso in evidenza e le ormai onnipresenti tastiera a rendere il tutto molto horror.
"Land of Tears" è un altro brano spacca ossa, con un riff iniziale davvero azzeccato e denso di carica distruttiva, poi sul ritornello che da il nome alla song si rallenta, l'atmosfera diviene sognante alla Dead Can Dance, per sfociare nell'assolo blues sopra lacrime e lamenti vari di sottofondo. Agghiacciante.
Si prosegue con la lasciva "Prophetic Revelations", song che parte in sordina, per poi accelerare e rimanere tesa e nervosa per quasi l'intera durata, tranne che per l'apertura sul chorus veramente inquietante con organo da cattedrale in sottofondo e finale con campionamento di voci femminile in estasi sessuale.
"Testimony" è una song dall'animo death davvero battagliero, che però trova la forza di emergere grazie al mid tempo centrale davvero teatrale con tastiere e sample in stile canto gregoriano e l'ennesimo grande assolo dell'accoppiata Mameli/Uterwijk.
"Presence of the death" è sicuramente il pezzo più thrash oriented dell'album, addirittura riporta alla mente qualche dissonanza alla Voivod, un grande lavoro al basso, quindi ancora un cambio radicale di stile con un onirico intermezzo e il ritorno al riff principale. Come sempre ottimo risulta il lavore dei due axe men.
Un altro gioiello: "Stigmatized", song piena di riff sciorinati a cascata, molto coinvolgente nel sapere dosare brutalità e melodia, atmosfera da inquisizione e nerbo death metal.
"In Sorrow", lenta e magnifica suite strumentale dal mood davvero depressivo e triste, chiude un album davvero imponente per ricerca in originalità e fattura, se si vuole il vero canto del cigno della band olandese che a mio parere ha avuto meno fortuna di quanto il loro talento promettesse.
Un album che consiglio caldamente a tutti coloro che nel '91 ascoltavano altro e non hanno ancora potuto godere di questo gioiello di potenza e ed impatto emotivo.
