Mi accingo a scrivere questa recensione, come anche altre volte, con un senso di sfida. Sfida sprattutto ai luoghi comuni: Chi scrive su Phil Collins è inevitabile che non riesca a scrollarsi di dosso l'idea di un artista capace solo di scrivere ballate zuccherose e pezzi veloci con trombe e tromboni. Eppure la realtà è diversa: Come tutti gli artisti anche Collins ha avuto alti e bassi, e quello che voglio recensire è un disco bello, molto bello!
"Both Sides" è la fine di un epoca per Collins, la vetta suprema della sua poetica. Poetica che aveva avuto inizio con "No Jacket Required", era continuata con "But Seriously" e culminata appunto in "Both Sides". Mentre invece i primi due dischi sono molto meno poetici ed espressivi di quanto ci si immagini e, nel primo, non basta nemmeno la cover di "Tomorrow Never Now" a risollevarne le sorti. Le sorprese di "Both Sides" sono molte e tutte emozionanti. Musica assoluta anche qui? Bè lasciamo che sia la musica a dircelo;
La batteria di Collins, inconfondibile apre il sipario di "Both Sides of the Story" con un epico arrangiamento raro persino in Collins... La voce è pacata e rilassata ma tesa allo stesso tempo, è la voce di uno che sa quello che dice, perchè questo è il disco più sofferto di Collins. L'apice del brano si trova verso la metà: La voce aumenta di potenza fino a placarsi e allora rimbomba in lontananza solo una soffocata batteria... ma la voce riprende in un impeto di speranza sottolineata da una perla: un piccolo accordo di cornamusa che cresce, raggiunge l'apice insieme alla voce e tutto sfuma nell'accoramento più estremo. Bè due anni fa è mancata mia nonna di 92 anni, pace all'anima sua, quando ascolto questo pezzo vorrei che fosse ancora qui... scusate ma se è quasi impossibile spiegare a parole cos'è la musica assoluta proverò così, forse avrò maggiori possibilità.
"Everyday" è una corsa in un campo di erbacce ancora libero dalla speculazione edilizia. Ma ciò che domina nel disco è in assoluto il senso di epico come nella bellissima "Survivors", "Sopravvissuti nella notte" dice, e quante cose può significare. Sono da menzionare anche le ballate dove la batteria fa sempre la parte del leone, ma in maniera sempre elegante. Per concludere bisogna che la triade finale meriti un posto a se: Sono tre pilastri espressivi che si incastrano l'uno nell'altro in maniera perfetta. "There's a Place for Us", è apparentemente una ballata languida, eppure sotto questo manto c'è anche qui un senso di accoratezza come quello che domina l'intero album. Un basso sensuale ma religioso quasi. La voce, verso la fine ha un impeto di rivalsa, e poi sfuma quasi nella rassegnazione ma... Parte a tutta tromba, è proprio il caso di dirlo, la maestosa "We Wait and We Wonder", Bella, bellissima, costruita magistralmente, la voce di Collins è il sole nel cielo, un basso da arcangeli, parte stumentale con ripresa da brividi, cosa vogliamo di più? Nulla. E allora ecco a chiudere la leggiadra "Please Come Out Tonight", esci con me stanotte. E ripenso a un amico, a una donna, a un cane, a un gatto, c'è qualcosa di più oltre le nostre vite...
Un ultima nota: Collins ha suonato tutti gli strumenti.
