Nel 1981 usciva "Face Value" debutto solista di Phil Collins, un album che preannunciava i cambi stilistici del funambolico batterista dei Genesis, che avrebbe portato a molti fan degli anni 70 immensi dispiaceri, ma un enorme successo commerciale sia al gruppo che a Phil.
L'opera si apre con "In The Air Tonight" un brano che ebbe un immenso impatto sul pubblico di tutto il mondo e che rese Collins una popstar, cosa che probabilmente lo portò a continuare la sua carriera solista in concomitanza con i Genesis, il pezzo è molto bello a mio parere anche se sono presenti troppe sovraincisioni che lo appesantiscono inutilmente esagerandone l'atmosfericità. "Face Value" continua tra pezzi di ottima fattura e scivoloni tremendi; tra i pezzi più belli sicuramente "Behind the Lines" che non a caso è un brano originariamente presente in "Duke"; il brano più bello dell'album è di certo "If Leaving Me Is Easy" una struggente ballata con Clapton come ospite d'onore alla chitarra che ha dir la verità non si sente molto, il pezzo è fondamentalmente trainato dalla voce di Collins e uno struggente sassofono; un altro brano che spicca è la cover di "Tomorrow Never Knows" dei Beatles molto fedele all'originale; "I Missed Again" ha un buon groove ma rimane un abbastanza innocua.Una canzone insopportabile è "Droned" un calderone di idee male assortite in una specie di samba-pop-etnica veramente inutile con cori lamentosi che infastidicono ancora di più l'ascoltatore, un' altro scivolone tremendo Phil lo prende con "You Know What I Mean" ballata banale, brutta e riempitiva. Il resto del cd è irrilevante né brutto né bello, scivola nelle orecchie senza lasciare un segno.
Phil Collins ha distrutto i Genesis, è vero, ma ditemi quale gruppo non ha avuto svolte o non è morto a lungo andare, secondo me quest'album vale la pena ascoltarlo anche solo per capire il passaggio che portò alla svolta stilistica di un artista geniale e, si può dire, un po' venduto al dio denaro. Questo tutto sommato rimane un buon pop-album con tutti i limiti sopra-elencati, tuttavia io pagherei affinchè il pop moderno somigliasse a questo e non fosse la merda che ci propinano.
