I Queen si formano alla fine degli anni '60 dall'unione tra il chitarrista Brian May, il batterista Roger Taylor, il cantante Freddie Mercury e infine, nel 1971, dal bassista John Deacon. Essi acquisiscono una certa fama nei locali londinesi e nei dintorni nei quali propongono una musica orientata verso l'hard rock, da una parte, e il glam rock, dall'altra.
Il carattere egocentrico del cantante, Freddie Mercury, aiuterà molto il costruirsi della fama del gruppo. Gli show sono molto curati, i membri della band si travestono con abiti eccentrici: Freddie Mercury è famoso per le sue tute attillate, nere o bianche, e per i capelli lunghi, Brian May per il suo costume lungo da indiano e per i suoi capelli ricci eterni.
Nel 1972 i Queen hanno la possibilità di registrare delle tracce audio nei nuovi studi di registrazione, i De Lane Studios. Essi la colgono al volo e nel 1973 esce il loro album d'esordio, Queen I, la cui copertina rappresenta la figura del leader della band, Freddie Mercury, in posa, colpito da un fascio di luce; lo sfondo è di colore viola. L'album è un amalgamarsi di diversi stili musicali, dall'hard rock al glam rock e al progressive rock. L'album si apre con Keep yourself alive, pezzo introdotto da un superbo assolo della Red Special, chitarra di Brian May, che in un riff pungente racchiude l'anima rock della band. Il ritornello è molto orecchiabile. Il testo è firmato Brian May e incita le persone a essere sempre se stesse nonostante le pressioni esercitate da altre persone. Segue a questo pezzo rock una canzone più dolce, scritta da Brian May ai tempi degli Smile, primo gruppo del chitarrista, in collaborazione con Tim Staffell, cantante degli Smile. La terza canzone dell'album, Great king rat, è un pezzo molto hard rock, nel quale Freddie Mercury sfodera tutta la sua qualità vocale. Essa dura 6 minuti ed è un inno al rock; il testo dell'eccentrico cantante ha dei chiari riferimenti religiosi che potrebbero sconcertare. Great king rat è seguita da My fairy king, pezzo scritto da Brian May, dal testo molto fantasioso che parla di un mondo meraviglioso che viene distrutto dal male.
Il pezzo forte arriva però con Liar, vera perla hard rock, scritta da Freddie Mercury, caratterizzata da una lunga parte iniziale strumentale che sfocia nel canto in falsetto del leader della band. The night comes down è una canzone più introspettiva, scritta da Brian May, nella quale viene citata la Lucy in the sky with diamonds descritta dai Beatles nel 1967. L'unico pezzo scritto dal batterista Roger Taylor, Modern times rock n'roll, ha un ritmo molto veloce e il testo è una diretta critica al mondo logorato del rock di quei tempi. Segue Son and daughter, nella quale prevalgono i cori dell'intera band. La penultima canzone dell'album si intitola Jesus e il testo, scritto da Freddie Mercury, riprende i temi di Great king rat. Nel testo il cantante ironizza sulla figura di Gesù e sui suoi fedeli. Chiude l'album un breve strumentale che poi ricomparirà nel seguente album, Queen II, nella forma più evoluta e più conosciuta.
Un album buono come inizio, un inno al rock e a quello che rappresentava ai tempi. La critica non fu molto entusiasta nei confronti del lavoro e della band stessa agli inizi. Già il sound è molto evoluto e si capisce che il gruppo non scherza, ma vuole veramente conquistare le masse con show magnifici e musica che intrattenga. Queen I è un buon album che presenta i quattro al mondo.
