"Bent Out Of Shape" è il titolo dell'ultimo album targato Rainbow prima della reunion dei Deep Purple Mark II per la registrazione di "Perfect Strangers"Registrato in Danimarca nel 1983, questo disco è probabilmente il migliore con Joe Lynn Turner al microfono. Oltre al già citato Turner troviamo alla chitarra ovviamente Ritchie Blackmore, alle tastiere torna D. Rosenthal, al basso l'altro ex-purple Roger Glover e alla batteria l'appena assunto Chuck Burgi.
Lo stile delle composizioni è quello di un Hard Rock di stampo melodico (come tutta la produzione Rainbow dal 1979 in poi) di ottima qualità. A differenza dei suoi predecessori questo disco ha un livello qualitativo che non risente di brutte cadute di tono e di espisodi piu felici, ma si presenta piu regolare ed equilibrato. La classe dei musicisti coinvolti non si mette in discussione: magistrali sono le esecuzioni di "Can't Let You Go" (sicuramente la migliore del lotto), caratterizzata da una strepitosa prestazione vocale di Turner, "Streets Of Dreams" (il singolo estratto), molto bella e trascinante e lo spelndido strumentale "Anybody's There" in cui viene esplorato anche il lato più "sangiugno" della chitarra di Blackmore. Non mancano i pezzi veloci: "Fire Dance" è dura e compatta, una classica speed song alla Rainbow con ottimi assoli di Blackmore e di Rosenthal, "Make Your Move" è cattiva e al tempo stesso orecchiabile in cui segnalo uno splendido Turner, "Drinking With The Devil" è carina con un riff di chitarra travolgente. Pezzi più infelici ce ne sono, come "Desperate Heart" che è a mio avviso un po' piatta e che stenta a decollare e "Fool For The Night" la quale nonostante sia suonata ottimamente è scritta troppo "a tavolino" per colpire il bersaglio.
In definitiva però, il risultato è più che buono, complice anche una prestazione vocale finalmente all'altezza di Turner (davvero la marcia in più del disco rispetto ai due precedenti sempre con lui alla voce) e un lavoro più attento in fase di songwriting. Certo, i Rainbow hanno fatto di meglio, ma proprio all'ultimo momento hanno dimostrato di saper piazzare la zampata vincente.
