Quando il grande Ritchie Blackmore lasciò i Deep Purple, ormai esausto di quella band che lo stava logorando, pensò di lanciarsi in un progetto solista. Gli Elf, gruppo che era stato notevolmente spinto dagli stessi Purple negli anni precedenti, furono la giusta band da colonizzare dallo storico chitarrista; infatti subito ne assunse il pieno comando e, fatta eccezione del chitarrista per ovvi motivi, ne face la sua band personale di supporto.
Tra tutti spiccava il vocalist Ronnie James Dio, piccolo portento appassionato di tematiche fantasy, proprio quelle tematiche che saranno le colonne portanti della sua carriera pluriennale, a partire da questo album d'esordio: "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow", proprio a sottolineare il fatto che si sarebbe dovuto trattare di un progetto solista.
L'album si apre con la formidabile "Man On The Silver Mountain", un hard rock in cui da subito spiccano le eccezionali doti vocali del singer che, sorretto da uno dei tanti riff capolavoro di Ritchie oltre che ad un ottimo assolo, diventa da subito un grande classico della band. "Self Portrait" prosegue sullo stesso stile; mentre "Black Sheep Of The Family" è la prima delle 2 cover, in questo caso degli semisconosciuti Quatermass: si tratta di uno dei brani più orecchiabili del disco.
"Catch The Rainbow" è invece un capolavoro assoluto, il secondo del lavoro: oltre 6 minuti per un immensa romantica ballata che sarà anch'essa un classicissimo del gruppo, nel live "On Stage" la sua versione migliore di 15 minuti abbondanti. "Snake Charmer" è un altro ottimo pezzo sempre molto hard rock n' roll sulla linea dei primi 2 brani, nel complesso il brano che ritengo minore nonostante la sua più che buona fattura; ma il più grande capolavoro, l'ultimo dei 3 del disco, è la seguente meravigliosa "Temple Of The King": una suggestiva ballata con Ronnie che nell'inedito ruolo di menestrello ci porta a sognare nel viaggio epico di un uomo alla ricerca del tempio del re: "One day in the year of the fox, came a time remembered well, when the strong young man of the rising sun, heard the tolling of the great black bell/ One man in the year of the fox, when the bell began to ring, meant the time had cometh, for one to go, to the temple of the king".
Il divertente rock n' roll stile Jerry Lee di "If You Don't Like Rock n' roll" (per l'appunto) ci introduce a "Sixteenth Century Greenslaves", ultimo brano di punta del lavoro, che si fonda su un granitico riff che sarà saccheggiato senza troppo pudore dai Judas per il loro classico "Beyond The Realms Of Death": musicalmente un altro gran pezzo anche se inferiore ai migliori. A chiudere questo fantastico esordio ci pensa la seconda cover: "Still I'm Sad" degli Yarbirds in versione adesso strumentale.
Concludendo si può parlare di un esordio più che ottimo, un esordio molto influenzato dal classico hard rock dell'epoca, con punte di rock n' roll e (rare) di hard blues; niente di particolarmente originale, ma un disco che porrà inizio alla saga di una band fondamentale per lo sviluppo dell'heavy metal negli anni a venire, in particolare il power metal soprattutto per quanto riguarda le tematiche fantasy.
Questo disco è unanimamente ritenuto inferiore al successivo "Rising", considerato il grande capolavoro di questa straordinaria band; sicuramente quest'ultimo sarà un lavoro che, pur non distaccandosi totalmente da questo precedente esordio, si presenterà con un sound più complesso, maturo e definitivo, merito anche dei 3 quotati sostituti che entreranno nella line up dopo il tour. Nonostante questo, dei 9 brani dell'album ci sono almeno 3 sicuri capolavori assoluti e altri 6 tra ottimi spunti e grandi pezzi, ognuno condito da tematiche epiche e sognanti che arricchiscono il tutto, come solo il grande Ronnie sa e saprà fare.
Per finire non riesco a mettere meno di 5 stelle a questo album nonostante la certa inferiorità rispetto al celebre successore, come detto prima. Un album fondamentale per tutti gli amanti del rock.
