I Ramones, gruppo punk per eccellenza in America tra gli anni '70 ed '80, sono una band frequentemente accostata, per via del genere, della semplicità musicale e per i sentimenti di alienazione e ribellione provati dai membri stessi della band, all'altro gruppo punk per eccellenza di quegli anni, ovvero gli inglesi Sex Pistols. A mio avviso un paragone fra le due band non sta nè in cielo nè in terra: il punk dei Sex rappresentava l'utopia, il rifiuto a tutto e tutti, credenze, etnie, ideali, se non l'astratto concetto di "anarchia". I Ramones, più razionalmente (ma forse anche più "a tavolino") optarono per un punk meno estremo, ma forse anche più realizzabile, di quello dei loro colleghi d'oltreoceano. La filosofia da intraprendere, poi, sta ovviamente all'ascoltatore, tenendo conto che i Ramones hanno avuto una carriera pluriventennale, costellata da alti e bassi, mentre i Sex, molto alla Cobain, sono scomparsi prima di potersi spegnere lentamente. La summa dei venti e passa anni di carriera dei Ramones è stata quindi inserita in questo cofanetto che con le ultime offerte natalizie si trova a prezzi anche irrisori (a 10 euro vi "tirano dietro" due cd da 58 canzoni complessive, un libretto e fondamentalmente un piccolo pezzo di storia da mettere in scrivania).
Il sound dei Ramones non lo scopriamo di certo con questo doppio cd: soliti tre accordi standard, assoli nemmeno accenati, in generale uno stile totalmente volto all'aberrazione verso i virtuosismi tecnici dei gruppi prog-rock. Stile che fa sicuramente storcere il naso ai puristi ma che comunque ha dato alla musica canzoni dal significato sociale ancor prima che musicale come le famosissime "Blitzkrieg Bop", "Beat On The Brat", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" e via discorrendo. Non mi soffermo in una superflua analisi track by track, innanzitutto perchè le tracce sono 58, e poi perchè lo spirito con il quale è uscito questo cofanetto è quello di farsi un'idea della band americana, e diciamo pure che riesce perfettamente nel suo intento.
Capitolo difetti: prevedibilmente il disco è di una monòtonia quasi senza pari, dopo una ventina di canzoni già avrete sentito cose trite e ritrite e gli "One, two, three, four!" vi avranno già stufato; musicalmente non c'è granchè; ci sono un sacco di tracce superflue e si poteva allestire un prodotto decisamente migliore omettendo una ventina di canzoni, magari sostituendole con un DVD. Il voto complessivo che darei al prodotto è poco più di tre stelle, ma calcolando la panoramica a 360 gradi che dà sul gruppo, l'importanza storica del medesimo e la presenza di almeno 7\8 pezzi leggendari (non per questo impeccabili), la valutazione si eleva fino alla quarta agognata stella.

I Ramones hanno tolto il velo che celava la reale natura del rock: nulla più che voce, chitarra, basso e batteria, niente più che semplice rumore.
Tutti i pezzi dei Ramones, al fondo, si somigliano: tempo in 4/4, batteria e basso pulsanti, chitarra velocissima, totale assenza di assoli.
