Si sa il lavoro di cesallatura e di taglia e cuci che sta dietro alla tracklist del prodotto finale disco comporta spesso eliminazioni spesso motivate più da ragioni di spazio e/o di oppurtunità, che di mero giudizio qualitativo. Scarti e b-sides che di solito finiscono in un angolo buio della discografia di una band, salvo tornare buone per un intramezzo o opera di transizione, una sorta di ponte per il successivo studio-album, che plachi l'attesa degli irriducibili fan.
Ed è proprio partendo da queste premesse che va analizzato "This Is Noise" un ep di 5 pezzi nella versione per il mercato americano uscito a luglio 2007, a cavallo tra "The Suffer And The Witness" e il fulmine a ciel poco sereno che fu "L'Appello Alla Ragione".
L'ep è composto da tre cover, di cui due dei primi Black Flag ("Fix Me" e "Nervous Breakdown", canzoni datate 1978) qui interpretate in una versione molto fedele all'originale, con un sound più abrasivo del solito e "Boys No Good" dei Lifetime, hardcore melodic band.
Tuttavia l'attenzione va focalizzata su quei due pezzi inediti, precedenti scarti dei due precedenti dischi, che danno un valore e una giustificazione a questo ep. Stiamo parlando della bellissima "But Tonight We Dance" in cui risalta il contrasto tra una strofa quasi sommessa a un ritornello cantato a pieni polmoni da Tim McIlrath in cui risulta tutta il calore e la passione della sua voce.
La seconda è "Obstructed View" tratta dalle sessions "Siren Song Of The Counter Culture", che viaggia a velocità doppia rispetto alla precedente, coinvolgendo e facendo saltare l'ignaro ascoltatore.
L'ascolto di "This Is Noise" è consigliato sopratutto a chi abbia già consumato l'intera discografia della band e voglia aggiungere un ulteriore piccolo tassello alla sua conoscenza per scoprire due piccole perle nascoste, gli altri devono prima passare dall'autostrada e poi più in la tra una "Drones" e una "Injection", prendere questo piccolo ma interessante svincolo.

A distanza di quasi un anno, è uscita anche una versione europea di codesto ep, con tracklist e artwork leggermente differenti.
