Biff non si discute e tutti i lavori dei Saxon hanno un’importanza rilevante nell’ambiente Metal. So che molti estimatori di questa band della contea York, si fermano dopo l'uscita dei primi album che hanno fatto la storia della NWOBHM. Io no. Per me è un piacere DeRecensire i Saxon e questo primo disco sotto contratto EMI. Colmiamo il vuoto di “Innocence Is No Excuse”, l’innocenza non è una scusante e cover girl che mangia una mela con logo della band (tra l’altro questa copertina fa parte dell’elenco delle copertine più brutte dei dischi metal con Spaghetti Incident dei Guns).
Datato 1985, aveva destato molto stupore perché i suoni grezzi dei primi Saxon si erano ammorbiditi dando spazio ad una sonorità molto più contemporanea. Chiamiamola AOR o Def Leppard Oriented, allontanandosi dal Metal classico. Ricordiamoci che erano già usciti i primi 2 album dei Metallica e gli Slayer avevano buttato in pasto agli headbangers “Hell Awaits”. Tutto il movimento Metal si stava spostando verso i suoni più aggressivi delle nuove band e lo spazio lasciato libero veniva occupato dai rockettari che iniziavano a capire in ritardo l’Heavy Metal. E così la critica specializzata l’aveva smontato. Invece questo è un lavoro apprezzabile per la quantità di canzoni belle e semplici. Ascoltare la voce del signor Byford è un piacere. È lui, è sempre lui. Con quella grinta che si porta dietro dagli esordi. Il suono della band è il meglio si possa ascoltare in quel periodo. Missaggio con gran cura dedicata alla ricerca degli effetti della batteria. Cassa e rullante con quella punta sonora che tutti i bassisti vorrebbero per far emergere il proprio strumento.
I Saxon erano cambiati. Nella musica bisogna cambiare, non si può rifare sempre lo stesso giro armonico per soddisfare i fans. Anche se il cambiamento non vuol dire migliorare. Vuol dire semplicemente dare spazio a nuove idee. Cambiare significa prendere una nuova strada e questo è un cd che si ascolta piacevolmente fino alla fine perché comunque la Biff Family è una garanzia, mai scontati e mai banali. I pezzi che emergono sono Call of the Wild, Back on the Streets e Broken Heroes. Se proprio devo marcare un aspetto negativo, avrei evitato alcuni cori forse troppo orchestrali che però il mercato Americano voleva, per un sound più radiofonico.
