Dopo il successo di "Denim And Leather", nel 1983 Biff Byford e soci rilasciarono il loro quinto capitolo discografico in studio: questo "Power & The Glory", meno incisivo a mio parere dei suoi illustri predecessori, ma pur sempre un'uscita di tutto rispetto, sempre pregna del loro inconfondibile sound sporco e accattivante.
Ad aprire le danze è la fantastica title track; "The Power And The Glory", appunto: una storia di mercenari rozzi e feroci, una specie di grezza epica da strada, una song trascinante, aggressiva, veloce, feroce, compatta, senza punti deboli: un vero muro di fuoco in purissimo stile Saxon; una menzione particolare al lavoro di cesello del bassista Steve Dawson e un'altra per il refrain, trascinante e che non si vorrebbe finisse mai: in definitiva questa è, almeno secondo me, la track più riuscita dell'album, insieme a quella conclusiva, "The Eagle Has Landed". Segue la più rilassata "Redline", tipica canzone da motociclisti e motociclette, che alcuni potrebbero trovare un pò scontata, con il suo andamento da rock'n'roll classico, ma che a me piace molto, in particolare l'assolo di chitarra, sognante e aggressivo allo stesso tempo. La successiva "Warrior" ricorda nella sua parte iniziale "Dissident Aggressor" dei mai troppo lodati Judas Priest, e per il resto prosegue veloce, cantando di guerrieri nordici e devastazioni di villaggi costieri, ma senza particolari note di rilievo, tranne che per l'assolo, veramente molto coinvolgente. Introdotta da un arpeggio acustico, che farebbe presagire una melensa ballad, arriva invece "Nightmare", in effetti un brano più docile ma affatto sdolcinato: si tratta infatti al contrario di un pezzo che alterna parti più dure ad altre più sognanti e quasi malinconiche, come il refrain, che comunque è caratterizzato dalle chitarre quadrate di Graham e Quinn, e la parte finale, dove ritorna la chitarra acustica. La successiva "This Town Rocks" è un tipico inno da arena, introdotta da una scarica di batteria del loro nuovo elemento, Nigel Glockler, entrato in sostituzione di Pete Gill, e che dà proprio in questo pezzo una dimostrazione di forza molto convincente.
"Watching The Sky", dedicata al film "ET", tratta, appunto, di alieni e astronavi ed è, a detta degli stessi Saxon, il pezzo più commerciale del lotto: infatti la melodia è accattivante e 'catchy', ma non sono assenti improvvisi ritorni di fiamma più metallici, mentre sorprende il finale, che assume un andamento addirittura rock'n'blues e che sfuma un pò velocemente, quasi a voler sottolineare ancora di più il cambio di tempo. "Midas Touch" è un altro ottimo pezzo, che alterna parti acustiche a sfuriate chitarristiche nel refrain; eccelsa l'interpretazione di Byford, a tratti sofferta e a tratti aggressiva: anche l'assolo di chitarra si sviluppa in questo dualismo: dapprima lento e sofferto, con il supporto della chitarra acustica, poi veloce e lanciato a tutta potenza. Il pezzo è buono, ma nulla rispetto a quanto riserva l'ultimo brano: lento, maestoso, solenne, affine per ritmi e sound ai Led Zeppelin più psichedelici, arriva quasi sornione "The Eagle Has Landed", che ci riporta ai lontani e magnifici anni 70, alternando queste parti più psichedeliche ad altre più dure, ma mai veloci o eccessive, bensì sempre misurate, solenni, con un lieve pizzico della primissima NWOBHM (mi riferisco ai primissimi Judas di "Sad Wings Of Destiny", in particolare "Victim Of Changes", dove comunque questi ultimi erano ancora ampiamente influenzati dai Led Zep e dai Black Sabbath); un pezzo assolutamente da ascoltare, imperdibile, che solamente alla fine prende più velocità, senza comunque rompere mai il sogno.
Album forse non eccelso (non mi riferisco ai singoli episodi ma alla sua interezza) ma comunque da avere, senza ombra di dubbio; consigliato a tutti gli amanti della NWOBHM e del rock ben fatto di un tempo, un acquisto che non deluderà nessuno: garantito!!
