Dopo il bellissimo "Street fighting years" i Simple Minds hanno subito (forse giustamente) pareri negativi su tutti gli album successivi, perdendo probabilmente anche buona parte del loro pubblico.
Nel 2002 la band, ridotta all'osso con Jim Kerr e Charlie Burchill, doveva dunque prendersi una rivincita, sapendo di non poter più sbagliare.
Questo "Cry", registrato tra Glasgow e Taormina, riuscì a far tirare un sospiro di sollievo a molti fans. Certo, non siamo davanti a "New gold dream" o a "Sparkle in the rain", ma di spunti interessanti ce ne sono davvero molti. Il disco è aperto dalla fantastica "Cry", un pezzo da una notevole melodia supportato da elementi di elettronica che non guastano. Per tutta la prima parte del disco si assaporano suoni de-frammentati, ritmi incalzanti, aperture melodiche degne di tal nome e singoli killer ("New sunshine morning"), con omaggi alla musica e alla tradizione italiana ("Face in the sun"). "Disconnected" sembra trasportare in un'altra dimensione, forse quella del non-sense dove tutto è futile. Ci si sente appunto "disconnessi", trascinati via.
Insomma, la prima mezz'ora scorre via lasciando un gusto dolce che va via poco dopo: infatti con pezzi trascurabili come "Sleeping girl" e "Sugar" Cry diventa un disco normale, un buon disco che però non può essere considerato uno dei migliori. Per non parlare poi della pessima idea di inserire un pezzo dance hard-core alla fine dell'album, sicuramente fuoriluogo in un disco sì elettronico, ma non da club house.
Da segnalare il buon lavoro dei Planet Funk su "One step closer" e gli ottimi arrangiamenti curati dallo stesso Kerr, a mio avviso in ottima forma e con una timbrica ancor più matura di prima.
