14 Track di puro tormento per una lunga discesa nell'oscurità e nei meandri della mente umana.
I testi sono metaforici, angosciosi, non più rabbia o pazzia, ma la gelida mente di un maniaco, versi subliminali, paura, amore, illusione...
Musicalmente, più melodici e ritmici, ci propongono un lavoro, a mio parere, molto più cupo e psicologicamente violento, dei precedenti.
Un ritorno alla melodicità che sconvolge i fan assatanati dei precedenti album, un vero e proprio sputo in faccia alla commercializzazione. Con un lavoro ancora più pesante gli Slipknot avrebbero attirato infatti la massa di adolescenti che ha garantito loro il successo con l'album anti-commerciale per eccelenza: Iowa, questo invece è un cupo album da Intenditori.
Nonostante tutto anche stavolta gli Slipknot hanno dimostrato il loro valore musicale, con la stupenda voce di Corey a fare da guida e un ritmo affascinante scandito dalla batteria di #1...
Le chitarre pesanti alla maniera di Iowa, si mettono in mostra con numerosi assoli, che anche se un pò estranei al contesto, ne arricchiscono la composizione.
Più importanti, nel frattempo si sono fatte le percussioni di Shawn Crahan e Chris Fehn che talvolta si scatenano in precise marce militari.
Decisamente in secondo piano il ruolo di Sid Wilson #0, il Dj, forse una mossa decisa per cercare di uscire dal nu-metal nel quale gli Slipknot sono da sempre confinati e che non ha molto a che fare con gli ideali di anti-commercializzazione degli Slipknot.
In definitiva un lavoro impeccabile deciso a stupire chiunque sottovalutasse il gruppo, con pezzi melodici e più digeribili, ma anche potenti e rinnovati come nel loro vecchio stile.
Qualcosa di tremendamente cupo e assassino, guardatevi alle spalle...Gli Slipknot sono tornati...
