I musicisti che se ne stavano tutti a capo chino, attenti a non perdersi alcun movimento delle proprie mani sopra i rispettivi strumenti vennero chiamati "shoegazer", che letteralmente significa "colui che si guarda le scarpe".
Noi non sappiamo se si guardassero davvero le punte dei piedi o che altro, ma non venne coniato altro nome calzante quanto quello.
Gli Slowdive furono uno dei maggiori esponenti di questo nuovo movimento che colpì la Gran Bretagna a fine anni ottanta-inizio novanta.
Il loro rock è trasognato e decelerato, talvolta anche allucinogeno e psichedelico; il loro sound ricama visioni oniriche collocandosi nel profondo dell’anima, tra il respiro e i battiti del cuore.
Questa è la melodia che vorrei mi accompagnasse durante le riflessioni, i pensieri, i viaggi con la mente… questa è la musica che vorrei sentire quando mi logoro di illusioni.
Nove tracce di malinconia pacata, sempre pronta a farsi viva attraverso feedbacks da lacrima.
Le parole sussurrate di "Catch the Breeze" hanno sensi di perdizione, abbattimento e avvilimento; "Ballad of Sister Sue" è struggente…
Il resto è difficile da descrivere a parole, va ascoltato e vissuto.
Avevano gran classe e grande stile (guardare la copertina), tant'è che Brian Eno volle collaborare con loro al successivo album, l'indimenticabile "Souvlaki".
Non cambiarono radicalmente il modo di fare musica, ma influenzarono parecchie generazioni future.
