Flying Away - Dj, please play Smoke City for me

Sono tanti gli ingredienti che formano questo colorato cocktail musicale che è il primo album degli Smoke City (1997 - e purtroppo questa è già metà della loro discografia). Il trio britannico nasce dall'incontro fra il dj Mark Brown (programmazioni, tastiere, percussioni, effetti e voce) e la vocalist/compositrice Nina Miranda, a cui si unisce il produttore/musicista Chris Franck (chitarre, tastiere, basso, percussioni e voce).
Il sound variopinto e unico, unito a quella perla che è la voce della Miranda (dalle origini brasiliane-inglesi-francesi) creano un album originalissimo e assolutamente contagioso. A partire dalla prima traccia, singolo trainante che ce li ha fatti conoscere: Underwater Love. Tra suoni liquidi, leggere percussioni samba in mid-tempo e un'eterea atmosfera trip-hop , Nina ci ammalia con la sua suadente voce di sirena descrivendoci un amore che si insinua per tutto il corpo come fosse fatto d'acqua: "This must be underwater love, the way i feel it slipping all over me" mentre il cantato si alterna fra l'inglese e il portoghese. Devil Mood è il momento più 'hardcore': martellanti tamburi per una danza hawaiiana alle pendici di un vulcano infuocato, mentre la voce, più lasciva che mai, confessa: "Mon diable, je t'adore" tra gridolini e ansimi di piacere. La solare With You ci porta tra i cieli azzurri di una spiaggia caraibica, una melodia delicata di archi e chitarra reggae, un tocco di sitar e un pizzico di nostalgia: "With you I was me, and a bit of you too".
Preceduta dalla tribale e percussiva Numbers e dallo spaziale 'interlude n1', c'è la maliziosa e famosa quanto il singolo che l'ha preceduta, Mr Gorgeous, col suo mood molto samba e il caliente ritornello "Ay ay ay ay ayayay!". Terzo singolo, uscito solo in UK (così come With You) è la personalissima cover del classico bossa nova Aguas De Março 'd'O Maestro' Antonio Carlos Jobim, compositore di punta del folklore brasiliano (e vi consiglio di cercarvi il sognante Bossa Nova Remix del pezzo, presente però solo sul singolo). Dal taglio più chillout /elettronico è la dansereccia semistrumentale Dark Walk, a cui segue il folk di archi Jamie Pan. Giulietta, notturna ballata per chitarra arpeggiata tra le cicale e la risacca del mare e una voce dolcissima che canta delicatamente di come Giulietta scopre il proprio corpo e il Kamasutra: "Love is a religion and your lover is your god". Il giocoso interlude n2 ci introduce alla finale title-track: una melodia pop su arrangiamento stratificato di tastiere, flauti e campanelli ci saluta: "Il faut que je part, mon avion va partir. . goodbye sweet romance, I am flying away now. . "
